If you were anywhere near Tonbridge Park on Saturday morning, you’ll have noticed something: a lot of runners. And joggers. And walkers. And prams. And dogs. It was, without doubt, a bumper edition of Tonbridge parkrun — event number 510 to be precise — and at 717 participants, it had locals wondering: was that a record?
Well, not quite — but it came very close. It was the highest turnout so far in 2025, comfortably overtaking the previous peak of 713 runners on 29th March, and just behind the all-time Tonbridge parkrun record of 788 on 20th April 2019. So, while not a record-breaker, it was certainly a record-chaser, and an absolute cracker of a morning.
Sunny Skies and Good Vibes
The weather played its part — clear skies, mild spring warmth, and barely a breeze. Perfect conditions for a trot around the park. From club runners aiming for PBs to families doing their first ever parkrun, the mood was upbeat and the field buzzing.
There were cheers at the finish, laughter along the route, and the kind of Saturday energy that reminds you why parkrun is so brilliant.
A Little Help, Please?
With great numbers comes great responsibility — and the Event Director, during the pre-run briefing, made a gentle but important plea for more volunteers. Particularly, marshals are in short supply, and with a course as winding and people-filled as Tonbridge’s, they’re absolutely essential.
So, if you’ve got a spare Saturday coming up and fancy donning a high-vis vest and getting more cheers than the front-runner, do consider signing up. No experience needed, just good vibes and a smile!
Finding Your Pace, the Easy Way
One particularly welcome addition this week was the introduction of marker cards near the front of the starting area. These helped runners slot into a sensible spot based on their expected pace, with signs like Sub 20 mins, 25 mins, and so on.
The result? Much smoother spacing in the early stages of the run, with many participants giving positive feedback about the improved flow. Of course, at the very back, things were still a bit snug — but that’s to be expected with such big numbers. And to be fair, most of those at the rear (including me!) weren’t watching the clock — they were there for the scenery, smiles and shared strides.
Sharing the Park, Kindly
Readers may remember our previous post on the delicate art of sharing the park on busy Saturdays (check it out if you missed it!). With numbers like these, the message is just as relevant: a nod of thanks to other park users and a little patience goes a long way.

And for the record chasers, here are the top three biggest Tonbridge parkruns:
- 788 participants – 20th April 2019 (Event #304)
- 727 participants – 7th September 2019
- 717 participants – 13th April 2025 (Event #510 – this week!)
See You Next Week?
If you were there, you already know how special it was. If not — come join the fun! And if you’re not quite ready to run, maybe pop down to volunteer or cheer. Either way, Tonbridge parkrun is one of the friendliest ways to kick off the weekend.
See you at the start line?
