For many parents in Tonbridge, the absence of a large, quality softplay facility is more than just a minor inconvenience — it’s a gaping hole in the town’s family-friendly offering. With the nearest substantial indoor play centre now a drive away, the question arises: is it finally time for a new softplay in Tonbridge?

Tonbridge once had its own mega softplay, the now-closed Wear’m Out Play Centre, located at the edge of the town’s light industrial estate. While it served the local community for several years, the centre shut down during the pandemic and never reopened — a casualty of social distancing restrictions, high running costs, and, if we’re honest, less-than-stellar reviews.

A Missed Opportunity

Many parents will remember the more recent Wear’m Out not for its play equipment but for its awkward location, lack of parking, and patchy customer service. A quick look through TripAdvisor reviews paints the picture:

“Very limited seating, ridiculously hot, and overpriced snacks.”

“Kids love it, but for parents it’s a nightmare — chaotic and uncomfortable.”

Despite its faults, however, the centre was often busy, particularly on rainy weekends and school holidays. For many families, it was the best (and only) indoor option close to home.

Post-Pandemic Bounce Back?

With the pandemic now in the rear-view mirror and indoor activity centres across the country seeing renewed popularity, the question remains — why hasn’t Tonbridge seen a replacement?

The town’s growing population, increasing number of young families, and ongoing housebuilding all point to a rising demand. Local Facebook parenting groups regularly field desperate pleas: “Is there anywhere indoors in Tonbridge to take toddlers on a rainy day?”

What Went Wrong Before?

The demise of Wear’m Out was arguably less about the concept, and more about the execution. The warehouse it was located in offered little in terms of natural light or ambience. Parking was limited and awkward, often leading to traffic chaos during peak times.

The lack of space for parents to comfortably sit, watch, and even enjoy a coffee made it a stressful experience. In the end, many parents simply opted to travel further afield.

A Model for Success

Just across the border, Amazon Adventure — located near Frant train station — has shown how to do softplay right. Clean facilities, safe equipment, friendly staff, and on-site cafes offering decent coffee and snacks have earned it a solid reputation among Kent and East Sussex families.

This kind of model is exactly what Tonbridge needs: a bright, well-designed indoor play centre with space for both fun and relaxation. Something big enough to accommodate birthday parties, toddler mornings, and after-school sessions, while remaining affordable and accessible.

The Business Case

In today’s flexible-working world, where more parents are at home with their children during the week, softplay centres have become more than weekend havens — they’re weekday lifelines. The demand is not just there — it’s growing.

Tonbridge, with its excellent train links, central location, and thriving High Street, is well-placed for such a venture. A modern softplay centre would attract families from surrounding villages like Hildenborough, Hadlow, and Paddock Wood — not to mention those just looking for a fun, warm place to take their children that doesn’t involve a long car journey.

Wear'M Out The Old School Version — For those old enough to remember this was the original Wear’M out located near the River Medway, closing down in around 2007.

But Where?

The key will be finding the right location. The old Wear’m Out site is unlikely to be revived due to its layout and past parking issues. But there are glimmers of hope.

The planned Sainsbury’s/Angel Centre redevelopment may provide an opportunity. If a new community space is part of the design, a high-quality indoor play area could be integrated into the plans.

Another possibility is looking to the outskirts of town — near the industrial estates or business parks — but only if parking, access, and visibility can be guaranteed.

The Community Speaks

Parents aren’t shy about voicing their thoughts. One mum from south Tonbridge said, “We spend so much money travelling to softplays elsewhere. Why shouldn’t Tonbridge have its own good one?”

Another added, “There’s nothing wrong with the idea. Kids need these spaces. Just make it clean, safe, and somewhere you don’t mind spending two hours in.”

Final Thoughts

Tonbridge is a family town. With a little vision, investment, and planning, a new softplay centre could become a cornerstone of the local community — somewhere children can laugh, parents can relax, and the town can feel just that little bit more complete.
