Residents of Tonbridge and Malling are bracing for a substantial increase in taxi fares, with new rates approved and set to come into effect on August 1st. The changes, initiated by local taxi drivers who cited a three-year freeze on fares, will see an immediate 25% jump in the initial “flag” fee, rising from £4 to £5.
While the introductory charge is increasing, passengers will benefit from a slightly extended travel distance for this initial fee. However, subsequent fare increments, which remain at 20p, will cover shorter distances. This adjustment means that shorter journeys will experience a more pronounced impact from the fare hike.
For instance, a typical one-mile journey will see an 11% increase in cost, while a two-mile trip will become 7.1% more expensive. The decision to raise fares follows calls from the local taxi industry, which highlighted the rising operational costs and the need to adjust pricing to reflect current economic conditions. The approved changes aim to provide a more sustainable income for drivers while balancing the affordability for passengers in the borough.
