At the Tonbridge Bean, we are always keen to promote local groups that might otherwise fly a little under the radar.
If you’re a poetry lover in Tonbridge—whether you write or simply enjoy reading verse—there’s a local group that might be just what you’re looking for.
Roundel is a poetry group based in Tonbridge, affiliated with the Poetry Society as a recognised Stanza group. It was founded 13 years ago following an Arts Festival in the town and has since grown into a supportive and creative space for writers and readers of poetry. Over the years, the group has published two anthologies and collaborated with a local art group to produce two additional books combining visual art and poetry. Several members have also seen their work published more widely.
Regular Meetings
Roundel meets twice a month in central Tonbridge to write, develop skills, and share poetry:
- First Wednesday of the month, 10:00–12:00 at Tonbridge Parish Church. This session costs £5 to cover room hire. (Note, these sessions do not run in August.)
- Third Saturday of the month, 14:00–16:00 at Tonbridge Old Fire Station (TOFS). This is a smaller, informal session and free to attend, though members are encouraged to support the venue (grabbing a coffee to accompany your poetry.)
Poetry Breakfast at Nancy’s
For those who prefer reading poetry to writing it, Roundel also hosts a Poetry Breakfast on the last Monday of the month, 9:30–11:00, at Nancy’s Tea Room in Lambert’s Yard. A theme is chosen in advance, and attendees bring along a related poem to share. It’s a relaxed and friendly event, with a £5 contribution towards the space.
Public Events
The group also runs occasional evening events blending poetry and live music, with the next major session planned for Spring 2026.
In the meantime, Roundel is taking part in this year’s Walk Tonbridge Festival by teaming up with Walk Tonbridge founder James Pavlou, to host a special event called Walking with Words. This guided poetry walk will take place on Saturday 20th September and is open for booking now via the Walk Tonbridge website.

Roundel welcomes new members to all of its events, whether you’re an experienced writer, a beginner, or simply someone who enjoys listening to and discussing poetry.
