Hilden Manor, the much-loved Grade II-listed pub and former Beefeater in Hildenborough, closed its doors in mid-August after decades as a local fixture. But the historic site won’t stand empty for long – a new pub, Never Say Never, is set to open in December under the Kent and Sussex-based Elite Pubs group.
Elite Pubs is already a familiar name in the area, running a collection of stylish and character-filled venues across Kent and Sussex. For me, the most familiar is The Poacher & Partridge in Tudeley, just a short walk from Tonbridge. It’s somewhere I’ve been going regularly for years – the kind of pub that always feels like the right choice, whether it’s a casual Sunday lunch or a summer evening in the garden.

Part of the charm is how well it manages to cater for everyone. There’s a playground for families, but it still has that grown-up, relaxed atmosphere that makes it equally good for dinner with friends. There are plenty of different seating areas, a great garden, and the food is consistently reliable. As someone who eats gluten-free, I also really value their thoughtful menu, which makes eating out much easier.
That’s why the news about Hilden Manor’s future is so exciting. If Never Say Never brings the same balance of atmosphere, good food, and family-friendly touches that Elite Pubs have perfected at The Poacher & Partridge, then Hildenborough is in for a real treat.
The site is currently undergoing a full refurbishment to give it a fresh new look and feel, while still honouring the character of the building. Never Say Never is due to open in December – just in time to welcome guests for its very first Christmas season. You can keep an eye on their Instagram – above, for updates.
