Yes, you read that right — and no, it’s not a typo, a prank, or an out-of-date offer. Tucked away on the third floor of North Kent College’s Tonbridge campus sits The View Restaurant: a fully student-run restaurant serving seriously impressive, restaurant-quality food for prices that feel like they escaped from 1998.
The chefs? Students.
The service team? Students.
The food? Genuinely fantastic.
The value? Unreal.
And once you’ve eaten there, you’ll instantly understand why the place is PACKED and why you absolutely need to book well in advance.
A Restaurant Run Entirely by Students — And It’s Fantastic

Everything at The View, from the food to the service to the atmosphere, is handled by students in the college’s catering academy. Trainee chefs are in the kitchen cooking dishes that wouldn’t look out of place in a high-street brasserie, while hospitality students run the front of house with enthusiasm and care. It’s all supervised by experienced professionals, but the students are the ones truly keeping the place ticking.
Our Visit: Packed House, Beautiful Food

We’ve visited a few times over the years. The first time went in expecting a quiet training-restaurant vibe, maybe a few locals dotted about.
Nope. The place is always buzzing.
On a more recent visit, every table was full. Clearly we aren’t the only ones who know about the secret!
For starters, we had a beautifully delicate salmon gravadlax, cured just right and plated with finesse. Our mains were a fish dish (cod served on a bed of beans and with straw fries) and a pork dish (with Asian flavours), both cooked with a confidence you don’t always see at this price point. And dessert? A hazelnut and white chocolate roulade that felt like the sort of thing you’d happily pay gastropub prices for — light, indulgent, and a perfect finish.
Everything we ate was genuinely delicious.
Prices You Have to Read Twice
The pricing is honestly the most shocking part:
- Lunch: 2 courses for £13.95, 3 courses for £14.95
- Themed or evening dinners: From £18.95
- Wine: £14 a bottle or £4.80 for a large glass (and yes, smaller glasses exist, but… why?)
At a time when a single main course in most restaurants can easily hit £20, paying less than that for a whole evening meal feels almost mischievous.
A View Worth the Name
As if the food and value weren’t enough, the restaurant looks out over a sweeping view of the Kent countryside — not a bad backdrop for a long lunch. Although you won’t see much over dinner, the atmosphere is warm and relaxed, making up for the lack of view.
When to Go (and Why You Should Book Early)
The restaurant is open Thursdays and Fridays for lunch, with occasional Thursday evening services offering themed dinners and special menus. The accompanying bistro is open from 10:30am for coffee, tea, cakes and snacks if you just want to drop by.
But here’s the important part:
It’s hard to get a booking.
The place fills up fast — and after eating there, we completely understand why.
If you want a table, especially for an evening, book as early as you can. Christmas is already fully booked, and 2026 dates are now open.
The Bottom Line: Go. Go Now.
The View Restaurant isn’t just a great meal for the price — it’s a genuinely lovely experience. The food is delicious, the service is warm, the setting is peaceful, and you get to support the next generation of chefs and hospitality professionals.
You can find all the booking and menu details on The View website.
