Pressure from local representatives ensures completion

The persistent disruption in Bank Street has finally come to an end following a period of intense scrutiny regarding the pace of repairs. Southern Water has completed the essential sewer works that had previously caused significant travel delays and frustration for Tonbridge residents.

The resolution follows a public intervention from Mark Hood of the Green Party, who raised formal concerns regarding the attendance of workers and the management of the site. Kent Highways Officers were brought in to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that contractors adhered to the mandated working hours of 7am to 7pm.

Complex repairs delayed by water main discovery

The project faced unexpected hurdles earlier this month when a separate water main leak was discovered on-site. This required South East Water to attend the scene and remedy the leak before the repairs could safely continue.

Despite these complications, questions were raised regarding the efficiency of the response. Reports surfaced that work had stalled completely over a recent weekend, leading to expectations of a fine being issued for the lack of attendance. Following these public challenges and the involvement of highways authorities, the pace of work accelerated significantly this week.

Safety concerns on residential diversion routes

During the closure, traffic was diverted through Annison Street and Lansdowne Road. This caused particular concern for the safety of families accessing Slade Primary School and elderly residents living in the immediate vicinity.

Local representatives had urged drivers to use these residential streets with extreme caution. With the roadworks now cleared and Bank Street fully reopened, the pressure on these smaller side streets has been relieved, returning the area to its usual traffic patterns.
