The annual Tonbridge Lions Triathlon made a spectacular return on the Early May Bank Holiday, Sunday 4 May 2026, drawing a record-breaking crowd of competitors and securing its spot as a premier fixture in the South East sporting calendar.
Nearly 340 athletes took part in the event—representing an impressive increase of around 90 participants compared to 2025. After several years of battling challenging weather conditions, organisers and racers were treated to cool, dry conditions, providing the perfect backdrop for a day of intense competition and community spirit.
Adding to the prestige of this year’s event, the triathlon also played host to the South East Seniors Team competition for athletes racing in the Open Sprint category.
High Praise from Officials and Competitors
The event was a resounding success not just in terms of numbers, but also in execution. Official British Triathlon assessors awarded the event “Excellent” ratings across every single category in their official report.
Participants were equally enthusiastic, sharing highly positive feedback and cementing the triathlon’s reputation as one of the region’s favourite races. The day culminated in an awards ceremony where Lions President Phil Jesson and Race Director Trevor Dalladay presented more than 30 trophies to the day’s top performers.

A True Community Effort
Staging an event of this scale requires a massive team effort. More than 50 volunteers from the Tonbridge Lions, Tonbridge Lions Ladies, and their supporters gave up their bank holiday weekend to help. Valuable assistance was also provided by local Rotary members, the Swimming Club, and cadets from both the Air and Police Cadets.
Beyond the sporting achievements, the triathlon remains a cornerstone of the Tonbridge Lions’ fundraising calendar, generating vital funds that will be channelled back into local charitable causes.
Changing of the Guard
Reflecting on the day, Race Director Trevor Dalladay praised the incredible atmosphere and community cohesion.
“Whilst the good weather certainly played its part, having officiated for the last three years, the atmosphere and enjoyment by all those taking part was the best I have ever seen,” Mr Dalladay said. “I would like to thank everyone who competed, and especially all the volunteers and Cadets—without their help, the event simply would not take place.”
This year’s event marks a significant milestone for Mr Dalladay, who confirmed he is stepping down after three successful years at the helm. He will be handing over the Race Director responsibilities to fellow Tonbridge Lion Keith Roshier.
“I’m sure Keith will continue to make the event a memorable one for competitors and supporters alike,” Mr Dalladay added, looking ahead to the future of this beloved local tradition.
