The River Medway received a much-needed clean-up on Sunday as a group of local paddlers took to the water for the Paddle UK Big Paddle Clean Up in Tonbridge.
Organised by Epic Life, the event brought together river enthusiasts for a morning dedicated to removing litter from the river while enjoying one of Tonbridge’s greatest natural assets.
Fortunately, the weather played its part, with warm sunshine and calm conditions creating perfect paddling conditions. The strong turnout meant volunteers could split into groups and tackle different sections of the river, covering a significant stretch of the Medway throughout the morning.

Among those taking part were some very enthusiastic younger volunteers, with one child joining their Grandmother on the water and helping collect litter from the riverbanks. Their involvement was a reminder that protecting local waterways is something every generation can play a part in.
While organisers always hope for a clean river, volunteers once again found plenty of rubbish that needed removing. By the end of the session, participants had recovered three shopping trolleys, bags of plastic and glass bottles, fast-food packaging and even a couple of footballs.
The clean-up formed part of Paddle UK’s nationwide Big Paddle Clean Up campaign, which encourages paddlers across the country to take direct action to protect rivers, canals and waterways.

Events like this highlight both the challenges facing our local environment and the willingness of the Tonbridge community to step up and help. Every piece of litter removed helps protect wildlife, improves the appearance of the river and makes the Medway a more enjoyable place for everyone who spends time on or beside the water.
Epic Life regularly supports river clean-up initiatives and encourages anyone heading out for a paddle to help where they can. Litter pickers are available from both of their sites for those who would like to collect rubbish while enjoying time on the water.
A huge well done goes to everyone who gave up their Sunday morning to make a difference. Thanks to their efforts, the River Medway is a little cleaner than it was the day before.
