Tonbridge is currently experiencing unprecedented temperatures as an extraordinary June heatwave sweeps across the United Kingdom. Local residents have been seeking shade wherever possible as thermometers climb to levels rarely seen in the county during the first month of summer.
The Met Office has issued a rare Red Extreme Heat warning covering large parts of southern and southeastern England. For Tonbridge, this has meant daytime temperatures consistently pushing well past 35°C, with high humidity making the air feel thick and oppressive. The River Medway and local parks have seen increased foot traffic as residents look for any available cooling breeze.
Unprecedented June Temperatures
According to data provisionally released by the Met Office, this week has officially seen the hottest June day on record in the UK. A provisional temperature of 36.1°C was recorded in Hampshire on 24 June, completely shattering the previous historical June record of 35.6°C.
For Tonbridge and the wider West Kent area, the intense heat has been compounded by high overnight temperatures. Meteorologists have noted multiple “tropical nights” where the temperature failed to drop below 20°C, providing little relief for residents trying to sleep.

To find a summer that matches the intensity of the current weather, historians and long-term residents are looking back exactly fifty years. The legendary heatwave of June 1976 has long stood as the benchmark for extreme British summer weather.
