The Tonbridge Camera Club (TCC) recently celebrated the artistic achievements of its members at its annual awards evening, highlighting exceptional local talent in abstract photography. Held on 14th May at the Tunbridge Wells Football Club clubhouse in Southborough, the event featured the presentation of the prestigious Maurice Gilham Trophies, proudly sponsored by the Tonbridge Lions Club.
Honouring a Legacy of Community and Craft
The Maurice Gilham Trophies were established to honour the memory of long-serving Lion Maurice Gilham, who dedicated decades of his life to both community service and the art of photography. Gilham joined the Tonbridge Lions Club in 1968 and was recognised with his Lions Clubs International 50 Years Service Award in September 2018.
As the official photographer for the Tonbridge Lions for many years, Gilham was a familiar face at local initiatives, playing a vital role in documenting the town’s fundraising and community service events. The new trophies serve as a lasting tribute to his dual passions.
Distinguished Guests and Award Winners
The evening was attended by notable community figures, including Lion President Phil Jesson and Lion Trevor Dalladay, who spearheaded and coordinated the creation of the new trophies. Adding to the evening’s prestige was Councillor Mandy Wharton, the newly elected Mayor of Southborough, who was on hand to present several awards to TCC members throughout the night.
The competition for the Maurice Gilham Awards was fierce, with members showcasing incredible creativity in the abstract categories. The accolades were presented as follows:
- Abstract PDI (Projected Digital Image): Joint Winners – Nicola King and Philip Smithers
- Abstract Print: Winner – Philip Easom

A Lasting Inspiration
The collaboration between the Tonbridge Lions Club and the Tonbridge Camera Club underscores a shared commitment to fostering local culture and remembering those who shaped the community.
Reflecting on the evening, Lion President Phil Jesson expressed that the Lions were deeply honoured to present these trophies on behalf of Maurice’s family. The annual awards ensure that Gilham’s profound passion for photography will continue to inspire future generations of local photographers.
