Record-Breaking Crowds as Over 1,800 Runners Take On Run Kent Event

A record-breaking 1,844 runners took to the roads around Tonbridge and Leigh on Sunday, 4 October, to compete in the annual Run Kent Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K. Marking the largest turnout in the event’s fifteen-year history, participants enjoyed cool, dry, and near-perfect conditions for running and spectating alike.

The popular race day brought together athletes of all ages and abilities—from first-time 5K runners to seasoned half-marathon veterans—all while raising thousands of pounds for local charitable causes.

Community and Charity at the Core

Organised by RunThrough, the event has evolved significantly since its inception in 2011, when it was originally launched as the Tonbridge Half Marathon by the Tonbridge Lions Club and the Tonbridge Rotary Club. Today, the expanded three-distance event attracts competitors from across Kent and the wider region, with all proceeds donated directly to Lions and Rotary charitable projects.

The smooth operation of the day was made possible by more than 70 dedicated volunteers recruited by the Lions and Rotary Clubs. Volunteers managed critical operations throughout the event, including baggage drops and course marshalling.

A Picturesque Route with Passionate Support

Competitors followed a scenic course winding through the picturesque Kent countryside between Tonbridge and Leigh. Local residents turned out in force along the route, joining volunteer marshals to offer warm energy and enthusiastic encouragement from start to finish.

A spokesperson for the Lions and Rotary organising committee expressed gratitude for the community’s overwhelming response:

“Now in its fifteenth year, this event continues to be one of the region’s most popular road races. We are delighted to see a record number of entries this year and are grateful to everyone who made the event possible, especially our volunteers, sponsors and partner organisations who brought energy, enthusiasm and encouragement every step of the way.”

Looking Ahead to Next Year

Following the resounding success of this year’s races, organisers have already begun planning for the next installment of the Run Kent event, scheduled for 3 October.

To ensure next year’s event is even bigger and better, organisers are seeking community members to join the race team. Because volunteer marshals are vital to safety and organization, anyone interested in helping out for next year’s race is encouraged to contact Volunteer Coordinator Gordon Hill at thmmarshalling@gmail.com.
