Wondering what’s going on at the castle? Here’s your answer.

One of our town’s most iconic landmarks, Tonbridge Castle, has temporarily closed to the public as major repair works get underway on its roof.

The medieval fortress, which has stood at the heart of Tonbridge for more than 900 years, is undergoing essential conservation to replace the current gatehouse roof, installed just over two decades ago. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, which manages the site, confirmed that signs of deterioration prompted a full-scale renovation of the roof and surrounding structure.

The works include the removal of the existing zinc covering, introduced in 2003, followed by repairs to the underlying timber and stonework. A new roof covering will then be installed, helping to protect the Grade I listed building from further weather damage.

In total, £400,000 has been allocated from the council’s budget to fund the restoration. Alongside the structural repairs, the council is also upgrading the lighting inside the Great Hall — part of a wider effort to improve the visitor experience once the site reopens.

Originally built by the de Clare family shortly after the Norman Conquest, Tonbridge Castle has witnessed centuries of English history unfold — from medieval skirmishes to Victorian garden parties. Today, it remains a popular attraction for both residents and tourists, hosting everything from summer concerts and food festivals to school visits and weddings.

While the castle building itself is closed for now, the surrounding grounds and the on-site gift shop will remain open throughout the renovation period. And, the spring flowers are still popping as usual!

The council originally expected the castle to reopen in early May but this has now been pushed back to July. The food festival is due to take place on the 24th and 25th May in the castle grounds and of course Tonbridge Music weekend in July! There’s so much to look forward to once the scaffolding comes off.

Visitors can keep up to date with the progress via the council’s website and social media channels.
