Tonbridge might not have a co-working space just yet, but it does have a surprisingly good selection of coffee shops for remote working. Whether you’re create a laborious project plan, bashing out emails, or simply craving a change of scenery, here are our top picks for laptop-friendly spots around town — from the reliable chains to the charming independents.

1. Greggs – The Maverick Choice

Yes, really. Greggs.

It might not be your first thought when you’re looking for a remote working base, but Greggs in Tonbridge quietly ticks quite a few boxes. The cloud-based internet is fast — seriously fast — and there are plug sockets if you nab one of the prized seats along the wall. You can easily camp out for a few hours, topped up on budget coffee and sausage rolls.

Of course, it’s not exactly Instagrammable. The ambience leans more “service station” than “Scandi chic,” and things can get a bit chilly (both temperature and vibe). Some tables are a touch sticky, too. But if you’re after function over form, Greggs is a surprisingly solid choice.

Doors open: 06:30 to 19:00, reduced hours on a Sunday.
Busy times: lunch times and the breakfast rush.

2. The Market House – The Bustling Favourite

Probably the most popular choice among Tonbridge’s laptop crowd, The Market House delivers on several fronts. The large windows are lined with high stools and built-in plugs, clearly designed with remote workers in mind. The WiFi is reliable, and the coffee is excellent — rich, smooth, and worth coming back for.

On a good day, it feels like a productive little bubble. On a weekend or school holiday, however, prepare for a lot of little ones and background noise. If you don’t grab a dedicated “worker seat,” you might be stuck at a big table and feel a bit guilty lingering. The food menu is good, but prices are on the higher side for lunch.

Doors open: 08:00 to 16:00 Monday to Saturday, reduced hours on a Sunday.
Busy times: weekends (best avoid for work), Monday and Friday mornings tend to be popular too. Personally, I’d recommend getting there are 08:00 if you want a good “laptop” spot.

3. Caffè Nero – The Anonymous All-Rounder

You know what you’re getting with a Caffè Nero. The Tonbridge branch is spacious, with plenty of tables and plugs, and it’s generally a chilled, no-pressure environment for getting work done.

The loyalty app makes regular visits rewarding, and the staff are friendly and easygoing about laptops. Downsides? It can be a bit cold inside, and the WiFi has had some patchy days recently — fine for Google Docs, but maybe not for a Zoom call. Still, for a budget-friendly, no-frills setup, it’s a solid fallback.

Doors open: 07:00 to 18:30 Monday to Saturday with shorter hours Sunday.
Busy times: weekends and sometimes around lunch time, but generally it’s fairly easy to get a table.

4. Verdigris – The Stylish Spot

If you’re looking to romanticise your remote working day a bit, Verdigris is the place to do it. With its stylish decor and relaxed vibe, it feels more like a boutique café than a workspace — but it welcomes remote workers during the day. The coffee is great, served with a delightful little madeline on the side, and the loyalty card is a nice touch.

The WiFi is strong, and the seats are comfy. But it’s not a place to linger all day — especially as it gets busier in the afternoons. Plus, once you see the wine list, your productivity may take a hit…

Doors open: 08:00 every day.
Busy times: Monday mornings, Friday afternoon/ evening and weekends.

5. Basil – Fast WiFi, Fine Coffee

Basil is another top pick if you’re after a strong coffee and excellent internet. It’s bright, modern, and great for short work sessions. The tables are good sizes, and there’s a general buzz that’s energising rather than distracting.

That said, it can get very busy — particularly around lunchtime — and seats can be hard to come by. The food is tasty but definitely leans towards the expensive side, so maybe don’t plan to eat here every day if you’re on a budget.

Doors open: 09:00 and close at 15:30.
Busy times: Lunch time 12:00 to 14:00 ish and weekends (best avoid if you want to work!)

6. Waitrose Café – The Sleeper Option

Tucked inside the supermarket, the Waitrose Café offers a bit of a wildcard option for remote workers. There’s plenty of seating, the WiFi is good, and it’s a fairly anonymous, come-and-go space where you won’t feel too conspicuous setting up shop with your laptop.

The downsides? It’s definitely not cozy — think more canteen than café — and it can get quite noisy, especially with clattering trolleys and chatter. There are only a couple of plugs, and there’s always that lingering feeling of “am I really allowed to be working here?” But if you’re looking for a low-key spot to knock out an hour or two of admin, it can be surprisingly useful.

Opening hours: 07:30 to 19:00 most days.
Busy times: Mid-morning to early afternoon (10:30 am – 2:00 pm), especially on weekends.
