Once upon a time, walking groups were the domain of retirees and ramblers. But in 2025, something unexpected is happening: walking is cool again. And Tonbridge? It’s quietly becoming Kent’s capital of the group stroll.
From sunset hikes to Nordic walking squads, the town’s footpath scene is thriving—and it’s not just boomers in Gore-Tex. Younger crowds are showing up in bucket hats and Blundstones, turning countryside walks into social events with a side of serotonin.
Here’s your guide to Tonbridge’s top walking groups and why they’re more than just a nice way to stretch your legs.
Walk Tonbridge Club: Where Social Meets Scenic
Led by local walking enthusiast James Pavlou, Walk Tonbridge is the go-to for curated group walks with a twist. Think bluebell-strewn trails, sunset strolls, and routes with names like “The Trinity” and “Tales from the Shire.” Walks range from 3 to 7 miles, often ending at a pub or tea room. It’s less about speed and more about vibes.
Upcoming highlights:
- Sunset Bluebell Walk – May 1, 2025
- Knole and One Tree Hill – June 8, 2025
- Midsummer Social – June 19, 2025
- Back to the Viaduct – July 17, 2025
These walks are perfect for anyone who wants to meet new people, enjoy the countryside, and maybe snap a few aesthetic photos along the way. Events are normally posted on Event Brite or on the Walk Tonbridge website.
Tonbridge & Malling Ramblers: The OG Walking Crew
For those who like their walks classic and their routes well-planned, the Tonbridge & Malling Ramblers offer regular group walks, mostly on Sunday mornings with additional mid-week rambles each month. Walks are usually circular and about 4–6 miles long, exploring the beautiful countryside within Tonbridge & Malling and surrounding areas.
It’s a friendly, no-pressure way to get moving and see more of Kent’s green spaces.

WALX Tonbridge & Tunbridge Wells: Nordic Walking with a Twist
For those looking to add a bit of fitness flair to their walks, WALX Tonbridge & Tunbridge Wells offers a community of walkers and Nordic walkers who gather together for fitness, friendship, and fun. Led by Josine Baines, this group is all about embracing the outdoors while getting a good workout.
It’s walking—but make it sporty.
Bonus: Birdwatching Walks
For the nature enthusiasts, there are also guided walks focusing on local wildlife. For example, “The Summer Birds of Tonbridge Town” is a short guided walk looking for the few pairs of Swifts and House Martins that still nest in the south of the town, led by local ornithologist Martin Garwood.
Why are so many people getting into walking
It turns out that walking groups are the new social clubs. They offer a chance to disconnect from screens, connect with others, and explore the beauty of the local area. Plus, there’s something inherently satisfying about completing a walk and rewarding yourself with a coffee or pint afterward.
