A new Cake Box shop is coming to Tonbridge High Street, bringing egg-free cakes and a fresh buzz to a unit that has been empty for months. Fit-out work is currently underway at the former TaxAssist Accountants premises, with signage already in place and a grand opening expected in the next few weeks.
The arrival of the national cake retailer has been welcomed by residents and nearby business owners, who say it’s good to see movement on a unit that had been vacant since late last year.
What is Cake Box?
Cake Box is a UK-based bakery chain known for its fresh, hand-decorated, egg-free cakes. Founded in 2008, the brand has rapidly expanded to more than 200 stores across the country. The company offers celebration cakes, cupcakes, and desserts made without eggs, catering to a variety of dietary preferences including vegetarian and religious dietary requirements. Many cakes can be customised in-store, with same-day options available. The brand emphasises freshness, quality ingredients, and inclusivity in baking.
A Boost for the High Street
Tonbridge’s High Street has seen a mix of new arrivals and departures in recent months, with several units still standing empty. Locals hope Cake Box’s opening signals a shift in momentum for the town centre.
“I walk past this unit every day and was wondering what would move in,” said local resident Alison Murray. “It’s great to see a national brand investing in Tonbridge. And let’s be honest—everyone loves cake!”
Others echoed the sentiment, saying the shop will help draw footfall back to the High Street.
“We need more shops like this,” said Jake, who works at a nearby café. “People like the convenience of just buying a whole cake, and Cake Box offers just that. I think it’ll do really well.”
The unit, located near the centre of the High Street, was previously occupied by TaxAssist Accountants, which closed its Tonbridge branch earlier this year. Since then, the premises had remained shuttered until work began on the Cake Box fit-out earlier this month.

Good Timing Ahead of Summer
With warmer weather approaching and events like Father’s Day and graduation season around the corner, the timing could work well for Cake Box. Their product range includes personalised cakes for birthdays, anniversaries, and seasonal celebrations, many of which are available for same-day collection.
High Street shoppers say the shop fills a gap in Tonbridge’s food offering.
“We’ve got some good cafés, but nowhere dedicated just to celebration cakes,” said Karen, a mother of two from Hildenborough. “It’ll be nice to have somewhere reliable where you can get a cake on the day without having to order a week in advance.”
Cake Box’s ability to produce custom cakes within hours has been a major part of its appeal in other towns. The company uses no eggs in its cakes and offers a variety of flavours, from classic vanilla to more adventurous options like mango or Ferrero Rocher.
A Sign of Renewal?
While many independent businesses continue to face challenges, particularly with rising costs and footfall shifts post-pandemic, the addition of a national chain to Tonbridge could help drive further interest in the town centre.
“It’s always a good sign when companies choose to expand into towns like ours,” said Nick , who was on his lunchbreak. “Empty units don’t help anyone, so seeing one brought back to life is definitely encouraging.”
Cake Box has yet to confirm an official opening date, but a soft launch is expected ahead of a full grand opening with in-store deals and promotions.
Until then, the sweet scent of progress is already in the air on Tonbridge High Street.
