Tonbridge Bean

The highly anticipated ‘It’s a Knockout’ Sports Day returned to Tonbridge on Friday, June 20th, 2025, filling the Angel Centre with an atmosphere of joy, laughter, and spirited competition. Over 160 participants with learning and physical disabilities, alongside their dedicated carers, enjoyed a day celebrating inclusivity and fun. Organised annually by the Tonbridge Lions Club, this popular event has been a cherished fixture in the community since the 1990s. The day was designed to ensure full participation, featuring six engaging team relay games that required varying levels of dexterity, with comprehensive support provided for wheelchair users. The vital role played by carers in facilitating accessibility was evident throughout the day, ensuring everyone could join in the excitement. Highlights and Shared Joy

Highlights of the event included a lively competition for the best-designed ‘Joker,’ adding a creative and humorous element to the proceedings. Every single participant was awarded a commemorative medal, recognizing their effort and enthusiasm. A well-deserved lunch brought everyone together, fostering a true sense of community and shared enjoyment.

Awards and Celebration

The celebratory day culminated in an awards ceremony, where trophies for both the overall winning team and the best-presented Joker were proudly awarded. These honours were presented by the Mayor of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, Chris Brown, alongside the President of Tonbridge Lions Club, Phil Jesson, marking a memorable end to an unforgettable day.

A Message of Inclusivity

“The goal of this event has always been simple – to create joy,” said Phil Jesson, President of Tonbridge Lions Club. “It’s not about winning; it’s about coming together, having fun, and celebrating everyone’s abilities.” The Tonbridge Lions extend their heartfelt thanks to all participants, carers, volunteers, and supporters whose collective efforts made the day such a resounding success.

Who are the Tonbridge Lions Club?

The Tonbridge Lions Club currently has a membership of around 45 dedicated men and women, who gather monthly for business meetings and quarterly for dinner meetings. As part of their wide and varied programme of Lions service, the club orchestrates numerous fundraising and community service activities in and around Tonbridge. Their extensive activities include staging a nationally recognised triathlon, half marathon, 10k and 5k road runs, a popular Summer Fête, and the festive Christmas barrel organ collections. They also famously organise a fun day and games for less able youngsters, a senior citizens party, health checks, a school choir concert, and many other initiatives that significantly benefit the Tonbridge community.
