The sun shone on Tonbridge Castle yesterday morning as around 100 to 150 people gathered for a peaceful and energising celebration of International Yoga Day. With the historic castle as a majestic backdrop, the event brought together people of all ages — from seasoned yogis to complete beginners, and even a few little ones enjoying special children’s mindfulness activities.

Organised by Heartfulness, Manavata, and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, the morning was centred on building a sense of unity, happiness, and wellbeing in the community. The Heartfulness team kicked things off with a beautifully calming mindfulness session — a personal highlight — and a reminder that they offer free mindfulness and meditation sessions locally in Tonbridge. You can find more details on their website here.

Next up was a traditional yoga session, where it was a joy to watch such a large group of people moving in unison on the castle lawn — even if the supercar parade roaring past added an unexpected soundtrack to savasana!

It was a heart-warming and well-attended event, and we’d love to see more yoga take place in the castle grounds. Sadly, we know of local yoga teachers who’d be keen to offer outdoor classes in Tonbridge but are held back by the high cost of council licensing — such a shame when events like this show the huge appetite for it.

Let’s hope yesterday’s celebration inspires more accessible yoga in our beautiful town. For details of indoor yoga classes in Tonbridge, you can find our guide here.
