Tonbridge’s much-loved River Lawn is now on the path to becoming a designated Village Green, following a pivotal decision by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council (TMBC). On June 3rd, the TMBC Cabinet approved a motion to voluntarily apply to Kent County Council for the registration of River Lawn as a village green, with the decision becoming effective from June 13th.

This significant step addresses a long-standing desire within the community to safeguard the popular green space. As the landowner, TMBC will now formally submit the application in accordance with the Commons Act 2006. The primary motivation behind this move is to provide crucial protection against any future development of the land, ensuring its preservation for public enjoyment.

The decision by the Cabinet, proposed by Cllr Coffin and seconded by Cllr Mehmet, came after careful consideration of River Lawn’s history, its financial implications, assessed risks, and its recognized historical and community significance. This voluntary application streamlines the process, demonstrating the council’s commitment to protecting this cherished local asset.

The registration as a village green will formalize River Lawn’s status as a vital recreational area for the community, guaranteeing its use for lawful sports and pastimes. The submission of the voluntary application to Kent County Council is the crucial next step in this process, bringing Tonbridge closer to securing the future of one of its most important public spaces.
