A significant sinkhole has forced the closure of Shipbourne Road in Tonbridge, bringing considerable disruption to town centre traffic. The road has been shut in both directions between Dry Hill Park Road and London Road since last night, with authorities warning the closure could last for up to 21 days.
Both Southern Water and Kent County Council Highways officers were immediately called to the site to assess the unexpected void. The entrance to the road has been completely shut off, and diversions are actively in place to manage the flow of vehicles.
Southern Water has confirmed that investigations detected a defect on the surface water sewer beneath the road. A spokesperson for the company stated: “We have been alerted to a void at Shipbourne Road at one of our manholes. We now have a number of teams on site as our investigations have discovered a defect in the surface water sewer.” Due to the complex nature of the necessary repairs, a deep excavation is required before repair work can commence. “It is likely that this closure will be in place all weekend,” the spokesperson added, “once we can assess the damage and defect to the sewer we can provide further details of when work is expected to be finished. We’re sorry for the disruption this work is causing, but it is essential it is carried out safely. We will provide a further update about this on Saturday.”

For motorists, a detailed diversion route has been established. Traffic is being redirected via Bordyke (A227), then onto the A26 Hadlow Road, continuing via The Ridgeway before rejoining Shipbourne Road and leading to Dry Hill Park Road and Yardley Park Road.
This latest incident highlights a curious trend, as sinkholes appear to be a recurring geological challenge within the Kent area alone. Recent memory recalls a sinkhole opening up in Gravesend in May 2025, just over a year after Tunbridge Wells experienced a significant collapse on Culverden Road in May 2024. Swanscombe also saw a similar incident in September 2024. These repeated occurrences across the county underscore the localized geological vulnerabilities that can unexpectedly impact vital infrastructure.
