There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about a good old-fashioned car boot sale. I always love a visit as it brings back memories of mooching about a car boot sale with my Grandfather when I was small.

The early morning chatter, bacon sarnies wafting through the air, and the thrill of uncovering a hidden gem for 50p. Around Tonbridge, we’re lucky to have some cracking boot fairs just a short drive away – perfect for sellers, treasure hunters, and weekend wanderers alike.

Here’s your local guide to getting stuck in this summer.

Why Bother with a Boot Sale?

That “one day I’ll use it” pile isn’t going to sort itself. Car boot sales offer the perfect excuse to declutter, make a few extra quid, and support sustainable living – all in one go.

Here’s why boot fairs are worth your time:

  • Declutter your home: Free up space and finally say goodbye to those forgotten items.
  • Make some extra cash: Turn your clutter into cash – perfect for summer treats.
  • Support sustainability: Give things a new lease of life rather than sending them to landfill.
  • Soak up the community vibe: Last time I attended a car boot sale to sell some bits, I loved how many people I got chatting to. It’s really fun to meet some strangers and find out what they plan to do with the things they’re buying from you.

What Sells Well at Car Boot Sales?

Anything in good condition can find a new home – but these categories tend to fly off the table:

  • Clothes & Accessories – Think branded items, vintage pieces, and kids’ wear. Clean, ironed, and on a rail = instant appeal.
  • Toys & Baby Gear – Always in demand. Just make sure they’re complete and clean.
  • Books, DVDs, CDs & Vinyl – Paperbacks and retro vinyl are particularly popular.
  • Homeware & Bric-a-Brac – Kitchen bits, mirrors, lamps – you name it.
  • Tools & Garden Gear – Spades, planters, power tools… great for practical shoppers.
  • Unused Toiletries – Gift sets, sealed lotions, and perfumes go surprisingly quickly.
  • Small Electricals – Always demo if you can. Bring spare batteries!

Top Tip: Try a “mystery bag” – a handful of random goodies for a fiver. Shoppers love the surprise, and you’ll shift those trickier bits with ease.

How to Be a Boot Fair Boss: Tips for Sellers

A successful day starts with preparation – and ends with fewer boxes than you arrived with.

Before the Sale:

  • Declutter like a pro – Be honest: if it’s not useful or joyful, it’s boot-sale gold.
  • Clean everything – A quick wipe can seriously boost your asking price.
  • Pack your kit:
    • Trestle table (or two)
    • Groundsheet or blanket
    • Clothes rail + hangers
    • Change (bring more than you think!)
    • Carrier bags
    • Chair, water, snacks
    • Weather kit (sun cream and a brolly – it’s still Britain, after all)

Pricing Strategy:

  • Be realistic – people come for bargains.
  • Skip the labels if you like haggling, but clear signs like “Books £1” or “Toys 3 for £2” help.
  • Haggling is part of the fun – have a lowest price in mind, but stay friendly.

On the Day:

  • Arrive early – Early birds get the best pitches and the keenest buyers. But, be alert to buyers swarming your car as soon as you arrive! This can feel a bit intimidating.
  • Display smart – Group items logically, make things easy to browse, and showcase your best stuff.
  • Stay alert – It can get busy, so keep cash and valuables secure.
  • Smile and chat – A friendly approach goes a long way.
