There’s nothing quite like watching a film under the stars—and this summer, Tonbridge Castle is once again turning into an open-air cinema thanks to the team at Cinestock.

Two screenings are planned, bringing big screen favourites to the historic castle grounds for what promises to be two unforgettable evenings.

What’s On

Mamma MiaFriday 16 August
Get ready to sing along under the stars. The ultimate feel-good film, packed with ABBA hits, is the perfect pick for a warm August evening. Bring your friends, grab a drink, and enjoy a summer night filled with music and sunshine (even if it’s on screen). Gates open at 7pm, with the film starting at sundown (around 8.40pm).

The GooniesThursday 26 September
An end-of-summer treat for families and 80s kids alike. Join Mikey and the gang on their underground adventure with this cult classic. Gates open at 5.45pm, with the film kicking off around 7.15pm. Ideal for a family night out or a nostalgic date.

The Setting

If you’ve never been to an outdoor cinema at Tonbridge Castle, this is your chance. The grounds provide a pretty unbeatable backdrop—castle walls lit up against the dusk sky, space to sprawl out with a blanket, and a relaxed, festival-style vibe.

What to Expect

Each event is about more than just the film. There’ll be live music before the screening—either a DJ or an acoustic act—plus street food, popcorn, a fully licensed bar, and cinema-style seating available to hire if you’d rather not sit on the grass.

A few practical things to note:

  • No outside food or drink is allowed – seems a bit of a shame.
  • The event is cashless, so bring your card or phone.
  • You’re welcome to bring your own blanket or camping chair, or hire one on the night (arrive early for best choice).

Tickets

Tickets are on sale now, with various options available—standard entry, couples, family bundles, and concessions for over-65s, students, carers and Blue Light Card holders. Prices are reasonable, especially given the setting and entertainment included. Adult standard tickets are £17.53.

Alternative events

If you fancy seeing Mamma Mia, but can’t make the dates, then consider going to the outdoor cinema event at Tonbridge School, which is showing “Mamma Mia! Here we go again” on the 8th August. Details here. Although tickets are a little more expensive (£19), as far as we know there are no restrictions on bringing food and drink in.

You may also consider attending one of the outdoor theatre events at the Castle this summer. Full details for the schedule can be found here. Tickets cost around £20 – but it’s a live performance, so seems better value to us. Plus you can bring your own picnic.
