In the grand scheme of summer woes, Tonbridge may have found its most unexpected villain: a broken ice machine at Tonbridge’s beloved Wetherspoons, The Humphrey Bean, which has now been out of action for over a month.
For weeks now, customers have been left to sip their beverages warm — a cruel twist of fate in the July heat.
One particularly heartbreaking moment unfolded recently when two young women ordered two of Wetherspoons’ famous alcoholic pitchers. Expecting a cool, refreshing treat, they opted to go ahead without the ice. But when the pitchers arrived, only filled to a disappointing one-third (ice normally takes up a lot of the volume), their faces said it all: heartbreak, betrayal, and lukewarm disappointment.
While we all understand that machines break — and we’re not calling for a public inquiry (yet) — a full month of no ice does feel like a touch too long. Surely somewhere in the Wetherspoons empire there’s a spare ice machine or a heroic delivery of bagged ice waiting to be deployed?
As temperatures continue to rise, the people of Tonbridge wait with parched lips and empty glasses.
C’mon Humphrey Bean, fix that machine — the town is melting out here.
