It’s been nearly 18 months since The Gate House, the prominent pub by Tonbridge Castle, closed its doors in March 2024. Once a well-known fixture for visitors and locals alike, the large riverside venue now sits empty—a striking gap in the town’s hospitality scene.
At the time of closure, the company behind The Gate House cited “the wider challenges facing the pub sector” as the reason for entering administration. In a statement, administrators pointed to a perfect storm of pressures: lingering effects of Covid-19, shifting consumer habits, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
But as time goes on, the question remains: is there still a market for such a large pub space in the heart of Tonbridge?
In recent years, the town has seen a shift toward more compact, characterful venues like Verdi and Market House—places that blend drinking, dining, and social atmosphere in a more intimate setting. These smaller businesses seem to align better with current preferences, favouring quality over quantity, and flexibility over formality.
The Gate House site, with its central location and riverside views, undoubtedly holds potential. But unlocking it will require investment, vision, and perhaps a different kind of hospitality offer than what came before.
At The Bean, we’re keen to see this historic space brought back to life—whether as a new-look venue, a food hall, (such as the Good Shed in Canterbury) a cultural space, or something entirely different. It’s too prominent a location to remain closed for much longer.

Let’s hope someone takes up the challenge soon.
