A packed audience at the Methodist Church on Higham Lane was treated to an afternoon of music, joy, and nostalgia on Saturday, July 26, as the beloved Serenade of Memories summer concert brought the Tonbridge community together for a truly uplifting event.

Organised by the Tonbridge Dementia Friendly Community in partnership with Kent County Council and the Tonbridge Lions Club, the concert featured the Musical Sing-a-Long Choir in fine form — delivering a feel-good programme full of timeless tunes, sing-alongs, and touching performances that had the audience clapping, laughing, and even shedding a few happy tears.

Directed by Lion Richard Hill, the event struck a perfect balance between entertainment and community spirit. A standout moment came in the form of a beautifully performed mother-daughter duet by Louise and Ruby Sanders, whose harmonies captivated the audience. The ever-reliable Chris Coverly provided musical accompaniment on piano, giving the concert a polished yet heartfelt foundation.

There were plenty of lighter moments too — from a humorous duet between Richard Hill and Neil Charlesworth, to poetry from Pam Ayres performed with charm by Julie Hill. John Quinton delivered a crowd-pleasing monologue, and Gerry Machuca added an international flair with his rendition of “Here, There and Everywhere.”

The afternoon also featured a well-earned break for tea and cake, courtesy of the Tonbridge Lions Ladies, giving guests a chance to socialise and soak up the atmosphere.

Serenade of Memories continues to be a cherished part of Tonbridge’s community calendar, bringing music, joy, and connection — especially for those living with dementia and their carers.
