After weeks of anticipation, Iro Sushi has officially opened on Tonbridge High Street, bringing another taste of Japanese cuisine to the town.

The well-established chain, with branches across London and the South East, now offers Tonbridge diners the chance to enjoy fresh sushi and Japanese-inspired dishes without travelling to Sevenoaks or Maidstone. Customers can choose to dine in, collect, or order delivery — making it a flexible new option for lunch, dinner, or even a quick snack on the go.

On opening day, locals were welcomed into the sleek, modern space, where the menu covers everything from sushi rolls and sashimi to tempura and noodle dishes. Highlights include the Spicy Tuna Maki Rolls at £4.99, which had already caught our eye when plans for the restaurant were first announced.

The drinks menu remains a talking point. While soft drinks and a small selection of alcoholic options are available, some diners were disappointed to find no Japanese beers such as Asahi or Sapporo. Nevertheless, the overall response has been enthusiastic, with many welcoming the variety that Iro Sushi adds to the town centre.

Importantly, Iro Sushi’s arrival means healthy competition for Ni-Haw, the long-established sushi spot just a few doors away. Locals are already debating which they prefer, and both venues may need to work hard to win loyal customers. For diners, though, more choice can only be a positive.

Beyond the food, Iro Sushi has also altered the look of the High Street. Its opening has broken up the stretch of charity shops that once dominated that row, adding a splash of colour and helping diversify the retail mix. For a town often noted for its abundance of second-hand outlets, this feels like a welcome change of pace.

At The Tonbridge Bean, we’re pleased to see another national brand put down roots here. While Tonbridge continues to develop its food and leisure scene, Iro Sushi’s arrival feels like a statement that the High Street is still very much alive and evolving.
