Fire on the Medway: Tonbridge Lions’ Dragon Boat Race Returns This Sunday

Tonbridge Dragon Boat Race

Tonbridge’s waters are set to come alive once again as the annual Tonbridge Lions’ Dragon Boat Race splashes back into action on Sunday, 7th September. Taking place at the the Big Bridge in Tonbridge High Street, this thrilling event has become a firm favourite on the town’s community calendar—combining sporting spectacle with a big heart.

From 9:00am onwards, spectators can gather along the riverside to watch the first heats, with races running from 9:30am until 3:00pm, before the much-anticipated grand final crowns the champions of 2025.

A Day of Excitement and Team Spirit

Dragon boating is no ordinary race—it’s a fast, furious, and colourful watersport with roots in ancient China. Each Dragon Boat is a long canoe-like vessel, decorated with carved dragon heads and tails, and powered by crews of up to 16 paddlers, all working in unison to drive their boat down a 250-metre course. Add to that the rhythmic beat of the on-board drummer keeping time, and you’ve got a spectacle that’s as entertaining for the crowds as it is exhilarating for the teams.

The atmosphere promises to be electric, with local groups, businesses, and organisations forming teams and pitting their paddling power against each other in a true test of stamina, teamwork, and determination.

Where Dragon Boat Racing Began

Dragon boat racing has its roots in ancient China, dating back more than 2,000 years. The tradition is most closely linked with the Duanwu Festival (often called the Dragon Boat Festival), held to honour the poet and statesman Qu Yuan, who, according to legend, drowned himself in the Miluo River in 278 BC. Locals raced out in boats to try to save him, beating drums and splashing their paddles to ward off evil spirits, while throwing rice dumplings into the water to keep the fish away. Over time this ritual evolved into the exhilarating sport we know today—still keeping its carved dragon heads, pounding drums, and community spirit at its heart.

More Than Just a Race

While the action on the water is the main event, the day is also about community and charity. Every penny raised goes directly to support local charities and good causes through the Tonbridge Lions, making it a celebration of generosity as much as competition. It’s a chance for Tonbridge residents to come together, cheer on friends and neighbours, and know that their support is helping to make a real difference locally.

A Weekend of Food, Drink, and Fun

No day out in Tonbridge that weekend would be complete without a visit to the Tonbridge Food and Drink Festival, taking place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September at the Tonbridge Racecourse sportsground. With more than 70 stallholders showcasing flavours from Kent and beyond, it’s the perfect spot to refuel after the excitement of the Dragon Boat Race. Visitors can sample and buy everything from artisan cheeses, breads, cakes and sweet treats like fudge and brownies, to locally roasted coffees, specialist teas, and international delicacies. Whether you’re hunting for picnic favourites, gourmet gifts, or just an indulgent bite to enjoy riverside, the festival promises a feast for all the senses.

Where to Watch

The castle waters and riverside paths around Big Bridge provide a perfect backdrop for the racing. Families can enjoy the riverside buzz, grab refreshments, and soak up the festive atmosphere while cheering on their favourite crews.
