The Tonbridge Lions Club made a huge splash this weekend, hosting its largest Dragon Boat Race in the event’s history. Thirty teams from local schools, charities, and businesses took to the water for a day of spirited competition and community celebration.
After a series of high-energy races, the 14th Destroyers Sea Scouts were named champions. Close behind were finalists Bidborough School and Nourish Community Foodbank. The event also recognized the creativity of the teams, with Ashdown Travel Agency’s “Disney Dream Team” taking home the Best Dressed Award for their inventive costumes.
Beyond the races, a lively festival atmosphere filled the riverbank. Attendees enjoyed stalls from local businesses and charities, offering everything from games to free massages. Pizza Express and 65mm provided crucial support, keeping the volunteers well-fed throughout the day. The sunny weather was a welcome change from the previous week’s rain, creating the perfect setting for the festivities.
“Dragon Boat Races are about more than competition—they’re about bringing people together,” said Patricia Jordan, the event’s Chair and a member of the Lions. “This year, we saw first-time paddlers alongside returning teams, and the energy on and off the water truly showed the strength of our community.”
All profits from the event will go directly to local community causes, continuing the Lions’ long tradition of giving back. The success of this year’s race was made possible by months of preparation and the tireless work of volunteers.
