Tonbridge High Street is set to lose another familiar retail name as the permanent closure of the Claire’s accessories store has now been confirmed. Following national news of the chain’s financial struggles and a major UK-wide closure programme, the Tonbridge branch has been officially included in the list of outlets that will shut their doors permanently in the coming weeks.
Shoppers are currently being greeted by large, bright yellow signs plastered across the windows, advertising a “final clearance sale” with discounts of up to 20% off. For a store once frequented by younger shoppers and parents for ear-piercing services and affordable fashion accessories, the “measly” discount on offer has done little to sweeten the news of its impending departure.

The closure of the Tonbridge High Street store is part of a wider national announcement by administrators, who confirmed 145 Claire’s locations across the UK and Ireland would close after a rescue deal failed to secure their future. Tonbridge is one of six Kent branches identified for permanent closure.
Despite the disappointment of losing a national retailer, local sentiment remains optimistic about the vacant unit’s future. The Tonbridge High Street has generally shown resilience in filling vacant spaces, often welcoming independent shops, cafés, or other smaller businesses quickly.
As the Claire’s unit occupies a central and highly visible plot on the High Street, it is seen as a highly desirable location. There is strong hope among residents and business commentators that the relatively small retail space will be swiftly snapped up, potentially by a local entrepreneur looking to capitalise on the town’s steady footfall and commitment to independent retail, thus minimising the time it stands empty. The community waits to see what new use will take over this prominent town centre spot.
