The biggest transformation of local government in half a century is on the horizon, and residents in Tonbridge are being urged to weigh in. Government ministers launched a public consultation yesterday, 5 February, to determine how councils across Kent and Medway should be restructured to better serve the public.
The process, known as local government reorganisation (LGR), seeks to replace the current two-tier system with unitary councils. Currently, Kent County Council oversees broader services such as education and social care, while borough councils like Tonbridge and Malling handle local matters like bin collections and housing. Under the new proposals, a single authority would manage all services for a specific area.
The Preferred Path for Tonbridge
Matt Boughton, Leader of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, has voiced strong support for a specific “three unitary” model. This plan, which has gained cross-party backing, would see the county divided into three large authorities.
“This consultation is the best opportunity for residents, businesses, and organisations across Kent and Medway to make their voices heard on how local services are delivered for decades to come,” said Cllr Boughton.
He emphasised that independent evidence suggests this model provides the most effective balance of cost-efficiency and high-quality service, aligning closely with the priorities of local people. This approach has now become the preferred option for the majority of councils throughout the region.
Why Your Vote Matters
The proposed changes aim to streamline bureaucracy and potentially reduce costs by merging services under one roof. However, the exact boundaries and the number of councils created will depend heavily on the feedback received during this period.
Council leaders from across Kent and Medway issued a joint statement reinforcing the importance of public participation: “Our councils are your councils and it is important you have your say on their future and how they deliver vital services. It’s now over to you.”
How to Take Part
The government is seeking views from all corners of the community before making a final decision. Residents can review the various options and submit their feedback online through the official government portal.
