Community Spirit Takes Centre Stage as Tonbridge Lions Fete Triumphs at New Venue

On Sunday, 26th July, the town of Tonbridge came alive with colour, music, and celebration as the Tonbridge Lions Club hosted its annual Community Fete. Marking a significant milestone in the event’s history, the fete made its debut at a brand-new venue—the historic grounds of Tonbridge School. Drawing over 800 visitors from across Tonbridge and the surrounding West Kent countryside, the afternoon proved to be a resounding triumph, showcasing the very best of local community spirit.

Embracing this year’s inspirational theme, “Sport for All,” the fete combined traditional British fairground nostalgia with an energetic lineup of entertainment, interactive displays, and local engagement. From the opening beat of the parade to the final slice of cake served in the refreshment tent, the event provided a welcoming platform for families, local groups, and visitors of all ages.

Leading the charge was the dynamic **Samba Band Bloco Fogo**, whose infectious rhythms set a lively pace for the procession.

A Spectacular Parade Through the Town

The festivities commenced in unforgettable style with a vibrant opening parade. Assembling at River Walk, the grand procession wound its way along the High Street toward Tonbridge School, drawing enthusiastic crowds of onlookers who lined the pavements to wave and cheer.

Leading the charge was the dynamic Samba Band Bloco Fogo, whose infectious rhythms set a lively pace for the procession. The parade offered a colorful cross-section of the town’s rich community life, featuring:

Young Athletes & Performers: Local youth football teams and energetic cheerleading squads marched proudly alongside regional performance groups.
Emergency Services Support: A classic Fire Engine added extra excitement for young visitors, providing an impressive centerpiece for the procession.
Community Associations: Representatives from local charities, youth clubs, and civic organisations showcased their banners and festive attire.

The parade was officially judged by The Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Councillor Kim Tanner, alongside her Consort Jeff. Together, they had the difficult task of evaluating the creative entries before presenting awards for the best group and individual parade participants.

Non-Stop Arena Entertainment

Once the procession arrived at the picturesque grounds of Tonbridge School, attention shifted to the main arena, which hosted a varied and packed programme of live performances throughout the afternoon.

Tonbridge Soul Choir: Delivering powerful, uplifting vocal harmonies that resonated across the grounds, getting the crowd singing along to popular classics.
AMC Dance: Captivating onlookers with dynamic, high-energy choreography performed by talented young local dancers.
Niki Naki Noo: Keeping younger children thoroughly entertained with an engaging mix of interactive games, comedy, and family-friendly magic.
Collette Redgrave: Delighting musical theater enthusiasts with her magnificent rendition of Songs from the Shows, bringing West End glamour to the West Kent lawns.

In addition to the stage acts, the arena hosted the ever-popular Lions Gutter Game. A longstanding favorite at Tonbridge Lions events, this classic game of skill drew enthusiastic queues of competitors eager to test their aim and win prizes, adding a delightful element of friendly competition to the proceedings.

Stalls, Side-Shows, and Local Enterprise

Flanking the main arena, more than 30 stalls formed a lively bustling market. The stalls offered a vital showcase for local small businesses, craft makers, regional producers, and community organizations. Visitors spent the afternoon browsing handmade goods, learning about local charity initiatives, and participating in hands-on demonstrations.

No Lions fete would be complete without classic British side-shows, and the Tonbridge Lions Club pulled out all the stops to deliver timeless fairground fun. Families gathered around traditional favorites, including:

The Coconut Shy & Tin Can Alley: Testing the throwing arms of parents and children alike.
Kiddies Corner: Featuring tailored games and creative activities designed specifically for younger visitors.
The Children’s Tombola: Ensuring dozens of lucky youngsters walked away with exciting prizes throughout the day.

The variety of stalls highlighted the primary mission of the event: fostering local connections while raising awareness and vital funds for charitable causes across the region.

Civic Hospitality and Volunteer Service

A key highlight of the afternoon was the official civic reception held in the Fete Café. Tonbridge Lions President Richard Hill and his wife Julie hosted Mayor Councillor Kim Tanner and Consort Jeff for a traditional English cream tea.

The Fete Café served as a popular gathering hub all afternoon, where a dedicated team of Lions volunteers and friends worked tirelessly to serve fresh tea, coffee, homemade cakes, and savory treats.

President Richard Hill expressed profound gratitude to the many individuals and organizations who contributed to making the day possible. The transition to Tonbridge School represented a fresh chapter for the event, requiring months of careful planning, logistical coordination, and teamwork.

From setting up marquees at dawn to managing traffic, coordinating stallholders, and cleaning up after the crowds departed, the dedication of the Lions members, their partners, and community volunteers embodied the core motto of Lions Clubs International: “We Serve.”
