A Landmark Site on the High Street

The historic timber-framed building at 124 High Street, which formerly housed the beloved Bakehouse, has been marked as “under offer” on the Bracketts website. This Grade II* listed building has stood as a focal point in the northern “old quarter” of Tonbridge for years, and the latest update suggests that a new chapter may soon begin for this prominent site.

The unit, which spans approximately 2,279 square feet over three floors, is currently listed for let at £52,500 per annum. Characterised by its exposed beams and period charm, the building offers a versatile Class E space suitable for a variety of retail or leisure uses.

Ending a Period of Vacancy

The Bakehouse sadly closed its doors after a decade of service, leaving a significant gap in the local community. The closure was met with great sadness by residents, as the café and bakery had become a staple of the town’s independent scene.

This particular stretch of the High Street has faced challenges recently, particularly with the long-term vacancy of the former Gatehouse pub unit nearby. The sight of another empty shopfront in such a historic part of town was a concern for many who value the vibrancy of the local economy.

Looking Ahead

While “under offer” is not yet a completed deal, it is a promising sign that the unit will not remain empty for much longer. The removal of the “to let” sign would be a welcome sight for neighbours and shoppers alike, potentially bringing new life to the eastern side of the High Street.

Speculation is already beginning as to what might take over the space, whether it remains a culinary destination or evolves into something new. The Tonbridge Bean will continue to monitor the situation closely, and we will report further details the moment a new tenant is confirmed.
