Substantial Investment Coming To The High Street
Local punters will have to look elsewhere for their morning coffee and affordable pints this June, as The Humphrey Bean prepares for a significant temporary closure. According to the pub it is scheduled to shut its doors on 26th May and will remain closed until its grand reopening on 7th July.
A closure of this duration indicates a large-scale renovation project is afoot. It is always encouraging to see such substantial investment being made in our town centre, and while the pub was already in good standing, a fresh new design will certainly be a welcome addition to the High Street. Given the scale of past Wetherspoons refurbishments, expectations are high for what this major upgrade will bring to one of Tonbridge’s most popular drinking holes.
A Summer Of Sport And Music
The timing of the closure means the pub will be unavailable during some of the biggest events of the summer. Football fans will be particularly impacted, as the FIFA World Cup takes place throughout June. Local supporters will need to find alternative venues to watch the matches and soak up the atmosphere.
However luckily the refurbishment will have been done in time for the River Walk Music event which starts on Friday evenings starting mid July.
Alternative Local Perches
While the Humphrey Bean is out of action, there is no shortage of excellent local establishments nearby to grab a pre-event tipple:
- Verdi: Located just across the road for those wanting to stay close to the action.
- Market House & Fuggles: Options situated just across the Bridge.
- The Nelson Arms: Multi Award winning pub located 6 minute walk from the station.
Tonbridge is not alone in seeing its local “Spoons” get a makeover; The Samuel Peto in Folkestone is also set to close for a 7-week upgrade.
What Should Stay?
As we await the “new look” Spoons, we want to hear from you. Which features of the current pub are non-negotiable?
- Do you hope they keep the famous larger tables in the front window for people-watching?
- Is the fireside at the back your essential winter retreat?
- Or do you have a favourite perch in the beer garden that you hope remains untouched?
Let us know your thoughts as we count down to the reopening in July.
