Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council has officially appointed a new Mayor following a council meeting held last night. The borough’s most senior ceremonial role has been passed to Cllr Kim Tanner, who succeeds Cllr Chris Brown after his year-long tenure.
A Legacy of Service
Cllr Brown concludes his term having raised more than £3,160 for his chosen charities, the British Heart Foundation and Hospice in the Weald. His year in office was defined by a busy schedule of meeting residents, supporting local commerce, and championing charitable causes across the region.
The incoming Mayor, Cllr Tanner, represents Kings Hill and has been a member of the council for seven years. Her experience is extensive, having served on various committees including Finance, Regeneration and Property Scrutiny, as well as holding the position of Cabinet Member for Housing and Finance.
Her commitment to local government began in 2009 at the parish level, and she recently re-joined Kings Hill Town Council. Before entering public service, Cllr Tanner enjoyed a 37-year career in the city’s finance sector.
Community and Charity
A resident of Kings Hill for 25 years, Cllr Tanner is well-integrated into the local sporting community alongside her husband, Jeff. She is currently a Director at Kings Hill Cricket Club and a supporter of Aylesford Bulls RFC, Kings Hill Football Club, and Kings Hill Golf Club.
Speaking on her appointment, Cllr Tanner said: “It’s a huge honour to represent Tonbridge and Malling as Mayor and I’m looking forward to supporting the many organisations and individuals who make our borough special. I’d like to thank Chris Brown for his tremendous work as Mayor over the last year.”
For her mayoral year, Cllr Tanner has selected two primary charities to support: Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance, and Scott’s Project Trust, a Tonbridge-based charity dedicated to supporting adults with learning difficulties.
Council Structure and Cabinet
The transition in leadership also saw Cllr Sarah Hudson appointed as the new Deputy Mayor.
Cllr Matt Boughton remains the Leader of the Borough Council and has confirmed his six-member Cabinet. The portfolios for the coming year are as follows:
- Cllr Matt Boughton: Executive Leader
- Cllr Martin Coffin: Deputy Leader; Finance, Waste and Technical Services
- Cllr Robin Betts: Housing, Environment and Economy
- Cllr Des Keers: Community Services
- Cllr Adem Mehmet: Infrastructure and Tonbridge Regeneration
- Cllr Mike Taylor: Planning
