The rich history of Tonbridge will be brought to life this May as the Tonbridge Historical Society, in partnership with Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, hosts the inaugural Tonbridge History Weekend on May 23rd, 24th and 25th. Featuring a curated exhibition (25th May), guided walks (23rd and 24th May), and expert talks, the event offers a rare opportunity for residents to explore the artefacts and stories that have shaped the local community.
A Glimpse into the Archives
At the heart of the weekend is a showcase in the Council Room at Tonbridge Castle. Visitors can view a diverse collection of local artefacts, including intricate Tunbridge Ware and original trade tools. A gallery of historic photography will also be on display, providing a visual journey through the town’s streets and landmarks as they appeared in decades past.
The exhibition on the 25th May covers several key aspects of local life, from the industrial heritage of the area to the history of the River Medway and the Big Bridge. Members of the Historical Society will be present throughout the event to share their expertise and answer questions about the collection.

Saturday 23 May: Historical Walking Tours
Walk 1: Exploring the Fosse with Mark Ansdell
Time: 10:00 am Start Point: The Big Bridge
This 90-minute, fully accessible tour traces the entire perimeter of the Fosse. Participants will learn about its medieval beginnings and its vital function as a defensive structure for the townspeople living outside the castle walls.
Walk 2: Tonbridge’s Vanished Public Houses with Cathy Rishman
Time: 1:00 pm Start Point: Tonbridge Railway Station End Point: The Big Bridge
Embark on a 1.5-mile journey through the town’s social history. This walk identifies the former locations of notable breweries, hotels, and pubs that once defined Tonbridge. The route concludes at the Big Bridge, conveniently located near several modern cafés and bars.
Sunday 24 May: Expert History Talks
Location: Ground Floor Meeting Room, Tonbridge Castle
Talk 1: Life in Medieval Tonbridge by George Buswell
Time: 11:00 am
This illustrated presentation examines the day-to-day existence of Tonbridge residents during the Middle Ages. The session will highlight enduring local landmarks, including the parish church, the Fosse, and various historic buildings that still stand today.
Talk 2: The Worthies of Tonbridge by Pat Mortlock
Time: 1:00 pm
Discover the influential figures who shaped both local and national history. This talk focuses on the celebrated individuals honoured by the town’s blue plaque scheme, detailing their legacies and their connections to Tonbridge.
