The Tonbridge Civic Society has officially announced the winners of its annual Design and Community Awards, celebrating architectural innovation, public space enhancements, and local town spirit. The awards focus heavily on projects that avoid unnecessary demolition, support multi-sport hubs, and elevate the daily pedestrian experience on the high street.

Design Award: Reimagining Shipbourne Road

The prestigious Design Award was presented to Paul McPartland of Pomona Estates for his remarkable transformation of 37-39 Shipbourne Road. Rather than opting for demolition, the project successfully repurposed an existing, unattractive building.

The Tonbridge Civic Society highly commended the development, noting that it showed clear evidence of deep design forethought well beyond a minimal reuse scheme. Key highlights of the project include:

  • A beautifully well-considered front facade that drastically improves the local street scene.
  • High-quality detailing across the structure.
  • A positive, welcoming surprise for local residents that sets a brilliant new benchmark for future developments in the area.

Community Award: Major Upgrades at Swanmead Sportsground

The Community Award was secured by the Cowdrey Cricket Club following their extensive upgrades to the Swanmead Sportsground. The project introduced vital long-term infrastructure improvements to the area, including new seating, enhanced landscaping, and secure fencing.

This long-overdue facility upgrade breathes new life into the shared home ground of three major Tonbridge sporting institutions:

  1. Cowdrey Cricket Club
  2. Tonbridge Invicta FC
  3. Tonbridge Judo Club

Street Scene Award: Animating the High Street

Recognising the impact of smaller, visual initiatives that boost town vibrancy, the Street Scene Award was given to the Tonbridge Carpet & Flooring Studio.

The studio was praised for its creative, dynamic, and consistently changing window displays. These imaginative setups offer an engaging visual experience for passing pedestrians, actively elevating the charm and energy of the Tonbridge high street.
