Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council has issued an urgent safety warning to residents as temperatures rise across the region. With the summer in full swing, local authorities are urging the public — particularly children and young people — to resist the temptation to cool off in unauthorised open water sites.
While local lakes and rivers may look inviting on a hot summer day, they hide significant, life-threatening dangers beneath the surface.
The Hidden Dangers of Open Water
Swimming in non-designated open water carries severe risks that even strong swimmers can fail to anticipate. The council has highlighted several critical factors that make these spots unsafe:
- Cold Water Shock: Even when the air temperature is high, deep water in lakes and rivers remains dangerously cold. Entering it suddenly can trigger an involuntary gasp reflex, rapid breathing, and a sudden spike in heart rate, which can lead to immediate drowning.
- Hidden Hazards: Beneath the calm surface of local waters lie concealed dangers, including steep drop-offs, sharp debris, tangled weeds, and discarded items that can easily trap a swimmer.
- Strong Currents: River currents are often deceptive. What looks like a gentle flow on the surface can have powerful undercurrents capable of pulling swimmers off course or holding them underwater.
Strict Restrictions at Haysden Country Park
The council has explicitly reminded the public that unauthorised swimming is strictly prohibited in public lakes. This restriction applies directly to both Haysden Water and Barden Lake at Haysden Country Park.
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council maintains no designated bathing-water sites for public use anywhere in the borough. These regulations are in place specifically to protect public safety, and residents are asked to respect the signs and stay out of the water.

Safe Alternatives and Supervised Activity
Residents looking to enjoy the water safely this summer are encouraged to use the borough’s excellent indoor and outdoor public pools. Properly managed facilities offer a clean, supervised, and hazard-free environment for families. Recommended local options include:
- Tonbridge Swimming Pool
- Larkfield Leisure Centre
For those enjoying walks, picnics, or cycling along the borough’s beautiful footpaths and trails, safety should remain the top priority. Parents and guardians must supervise children closely at all times when near the water, ensuring everyone keeps well away from the water’s edge. By staying alert and choosing designated swimming facilities, the community can enjoy a fantastic and safe summer across Tonbridge and Malling.
