This evening, I took full advantage of the lovely summer light and did something I haven’t done in far too long – I strolled to The Plough in Leigh for a drink. A little mid-week date night, but a chance to get outside too.

It’s a really easy walk from town, and ideal if you’re in the mood for some gentle movement with a reward at the end. The route takes around 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your pace.

The Experience

I entered the park from the Tonbridge side and meandered through the shady woods. It’s a peaceful little path, leading you beneath the railway bridge. At the junction, I turned right – resisting the auto-pilot telling me to turn left towards Barden Lake – and followed the track towards Leigh.

The route is straightforward: just stay on the path, walk through the woodland trail and eventually you’ll come to Powder Mills. Walk through Powder Mills, down the footpath to the very end. From here, when you reach Leigh Road – a right turn takes you to the pub. This final stretch is along the road itself (about 200 metres), so I’d recommend keeping an eye out for traffic, especially as there’s not a proper pavement.

Once at The Plough, we were rewarded with the usual lovely setting. The beer garden is vast and never feels too crowded to enjoy. But if you visit in winter, the indoor area is equally charming and cozy.

As luck would have it, we’d stumbled upon their fortnightly pub quiz. We hadn’t planned to stay that long, but couldn’t resist entering. Highlights included interval snacks (yes, actual snacks mid-quiz!), an IPA for John, and a Chardonnay for me. We came somewhere in the middle of the leaderboard – not quite winning material, but we had a good laugh all the same.

Walking back in the dark was perhaps a touch less pleasant. While we felt perfectly safe, it’s probably not something I’d want to do alone.

Where + How

Practical info for anyone who wants to try it:

  • 📍 Start in Tonbridge Park, walk via the woods and Powder Mills to Leigh
  • 💰 Just the cost of a drink (or two) – the walk itself is totally free
  • 📆 Fortnightly pub quiz on some Wednesdays – check ahead. The Plough is shut on Mondays.
  • 🕒 Around 45–60 minutes each way
  • ⚠️ Watch for cars on Leigh Road near the end of the route

My Takeaway

I really enjoyed this one. The walk is flat and easy, with just enough greenery and open space to make you feel like you’ve earned your pub pint. The pub quiz was a bonus, and it reminded me how nice it is to just to do something totally impromptu.

Ratings

Here’s my quick rating of this outdoor activity in Tonbridge:

  • 🌿 Fresh Air Factor: 5
  • 🧘 Zen Level: 4
  • 🥵 Sweat Factor: 1
  • 😅 Out of Comfort Zone?: No
  • Would I Do It Again? Yes – especially with a group of friends or in the autumn

My Local Tips

If you’re planning to do the walk in the evening, bring a torch or use your phone light for the return leg. It gets very dark in places!

Don’t do this walk on Mondays, as the pub is shut. We’ve made that mistake before.

And if you want to do the quiz, it’s best to book a table. You can find it fortnightly at the Plough on a Wednesday at 19:30.
