The benches along Tonbridge’s popular Woodland Walk have been repaired, refurbished, and returned to their positions following a spate of vandalism earlier this year.
The damage left the benches unsafe after vandals targeted the site, stealing structural bolts and commemorative plaques. Woodland Walk, which runs along the Penn Stream connecting Frog Bridge Sportsground to Scotched Field, is a heavily used route for local walkers and residents who were left without seating for much of the season.
Expressing his frustration over the damage, Cllr Des Keers, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said:
“This mindless theft and vandalism quite frankly makes my blood boil. These benches are provided for the community to enjoy and to have them out of use over this lovely summer has been a great loss to the people that use that path. I am pleased that not only have the benches been repaired but that we have taken the opportunity to refurbish them at the same time.”
To prevent similar incidents in the future, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council members have called for stronger security measures along the path. Work is already underway to ensure the area is better monitored and protected.
Local Member Dennis King added:
“Des and I have been working with the Leisure Services team to identify suitable locations to enhance CCTV in that area and the Antisocial Behaviour Task Force will be involved with the protection of the benches.”
With the benches now fully restored and safely back in situ, local residents can once again take a seat and enjoy the scenic walk along the stream.
