Work on a much-anticipated new lighting scheme along Tonbridge’s riverside path is officially set to begin this autumn, bringing better visibility and peace of mind to local pedestrians and cyclists.
The project will illuminate a popular 380-metre stretch connecting Town Lock directly to the retail parks on Vale Road and Cannon Lane. Designed to make the well-trodden path feel significantly safer, more accessible, and more welcoming year-round, the route acts as a vital artery between the town centre, residential areas, offices, and shops.
Plans were initially approved by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s Cabinet last year. Although progress hit delays during the contractor appointment process, a suitable partner has now been secured, with construction scheduled to kick off in November.

Cllr Adem Mehmet, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Tonbridge Regeneration, welcomed the milestone:
“It’s great to know that after a tremendous amount of work, construction will start on the riverside lighting scheme in a matter of weeks. We know this is an improvement many people have wanted and needed, so we’d like to thank residents for their patience while we worked through the procurement process and secured the right contractor.
“The route is important to connect different parts of the town and the new lighting will make it safer and easier to use, especially during the winter months.”
Protecting Local Wildlife
Given that the River Medway is a crucial hub for local biodiversity, ecological impact has been a top priority. The council consulted closely with both the Kent Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency throughout the design phase to ensure natural habitats remain undisturbed.
The resulting plan utilizes carefully directed column lighting. This approach provides clear illumination for path users while remaining energy-efficient, sustainable, and minimizing light spill to protect birds and other riverbank wildlife.
Funding and Timeline
The £100,000 project is backed by multiple funding sources, including the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Business Rates Pool programme. Beyond safety, local leaders hope the enhanced walkway will encourage more active travel and help reduce unnecessary car journeys across town.
Weather permitting, construction is expected to wrap up by Christmas 2026.
