You may have heard the rumblings—another shop shutting its doors. And sadly, this time it’s our very own Morrisons Daily on Higham Lane, which will be closing on April 16th as part of a nationwide shake-up by the supermarket giant.
Morrisons is trimming the fat, so to speak, with 17 Morrisons Daily stores set to close across the UK, including ours here in Tonbridge. Alongside this, they’re shutting 52 cafés, 100 in-store services (like florists and pharmacies), and dozens of fish and meat counters. It’s a major rejig and, understandably, it’s left a few folks scratching their heads—and some with concerns.
While the new Morrisons on the High Street is still business as usual, the closure of the Higham Lane shop will be a blow for those who popped in for a pint of milk, packet of biscuits, or bottle of wine on the way home. It’s been a handy little spot—especially for those living in this area of town.
The company says that “most of the workers” will be redeployed elsewhere, and that this is all part of a plan to “renew and reinvigorate” the business. But that doesn’t make it any less of a shame to see another shop disappear from our local patch.
At The Tonbridge Bean, we know it’s not just about groceries. Local stores—big or small—form part of the fabric of the community. They’re where you bump into your neighbours, where the staff remember your face, and where your kid once begged for chocolate buttons at 8am on a Saturday.
