We’re lucky in Tonbridge to have some real gems right on our doorstep — and none more so than Penshurst Place and Gardens. Now, this beautiful historic estate is getting the national recognition it deserves, having been shortlisted for the prestigious Historic Houses Garden of the Year Award 2025.

Owned by the Sidney family since 1552, Penshurst Place is one of England’s finest surviving examples of a fortified manor house. But it’s the gardens that truly shine at this time of year — and they’re a must-visit for anyone living in or around Tonbridge.

A Garden Steeped in History (and Roses)

Just a 10–15 minute drive from the centre of Tonbridge — or a scenic cycle or walk along the Tudor Trail — Penshurst Place feels like stepping into a different world. Famous for its 100-metre-long peony border, the gardens are a riot of colour from late spring into early summer. There’s also the impressive Union Flag Garden, carefully designed with roses and lavender, and the Jubilee Walk, created by Chelsea Flower Show gold-medallist George Carter.

The gardens aren’t just a summer treat either. Penshurst Place is very much a year-round destination — enjoy the vibrant colours of autumn, frosty vistas in winter, and the first signs of spring in the historic walled gardens. There’s always something blooming, and always a peaceful corner to discover.

How to Get There From Tonbridge

Getting to Penshurst Place couldn’t be easier. It’s just a short 10–15 minute drive. If you fancy leaving the car behind, it’s also a popular destination for walking or cycling from Tonbridge via the Tudor Trail.

  • By bike, it’s about 6 miles, taking roughly 60 minutes at a relaxed pace.
  • On foot, it’s about a 2-3-hour stroll, perfect for a sunny morning adventure.

Either way, you’ll pass through beautiful countryside and arrive ready for a well-earned coffee (or slice of cake) at the Penshurst Place café.

Make a Day of It

While you’re visiting, why not explore more of the village? Penshurst Church, right next to the estate, is a stunning 14th-century building well worth a wander. And if you’re feeling peckish, the Leicester Arms — itself a finalist in the National Pub and Bar Awards — offers a warm welcome, great food, and one of the loveliest pub gardens in the area.

Voting is open now for the Garden of the Year Award, and if you’ve ever enjoyed a stroll among the roses at Penshurst Place, they’d certainly appreciate your support.
Let’s hear it for our local gardens doing us proud!
