When grey clouds roll over Tonbridge, there’s no need to hide away at home. Whether you want to get moving, indulge in something delicious, or simply find a warm, welcoming spot to relax, Tonbridge has plenty of ways to make a rainy day memorable.
Here’s your ultimate guide to the cosiest, most fun things to do when the weather turns wet.
1. Catch a Show at the EM Forster Theatre
Tonbridge’s local theatre offers a packed schedule of performances, from plays and comedy nights to musical concerts and special events. Grab a ticket, settle into a comfy seat, and let yourself be transported for a couple of hours. There’s nothing like live entertainment to lift the spirits on a drizzly day.
Keep up to date with theatre events over on our events page. Or, on the EMF Theatre website.
2. Curl Up with a Book at Tonbridge Library
Tonbridge Library is a peaceful escape from the rain. Browse the shelves for a new novel, discover hidden gems in the local history section, or take part in one of their community events. It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a few hours of calm. And, it’s totally free!
3. Practise Your Swing at the Driving Range
The covered bays at Tonbridge Golf Centre mean you can keep your golf game sharp whatever the weather. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s something strangely satisfying about practising your drive while the rain taps gently overhead. With the snazzy Inrange tech, you can see how far your ball has gone, or play a game with a friend. Club hire is free of charge too!
4. Challenge Friends to Badminton
Book a court at the Angel Centre and have a lively game of badminton — it’s energetic, great fun, and ideal for groups. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to get moving without setting foot outside.
5. Feast on a Sunday Roast at The Nelson Arms
Few things beat the comfort of a hearty Sunday roast when it’s cold and wet outside. The Nelson Arms is a local favourite, offering generous portions, perfectly crisp roasties, and all the trimmings. Book ahead — it’s popular for good reason!
6. Share Pizza (and Wine) at Olivia’s
Bring your own bottle of wine and enjoy a relaxed meal at Olivia’s, Tonbridge’s much-loved Italian restaurant. Their pizzas are freshly made, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and it’s the perfect spot to catch up with friends while the rain patters against the windows.
7. Wrap Up and Go for a Walk
Sometimes it’s worth embracing the rain. Put on a sturdy waterproof, lace up your boots, and head out for a walk along the River Medway or through Haysden Park, or even to a pub like the Poacher and Partridge in Tudely. The misty, rain-washed landscape has a quiet beauty all of its own — and you’ll almost always have it to yourself.
8. Swim at the Tonbridge Pool
Stay active indoors by swimming a few lengths at the Tonbridge Pool. Whether you’re after a leisurely dip or a full-on workout, swimming is a brilliant way to keep the rainy-day blues at bay.
9. Relax in the Spa at Tonbridge Pool
If swimming sounds too energetic, how about a little spa time instead? Tonbridge Pool also offers a sauna and steam room, ideal for warming up on a chilly, wet day. Step inside, relax, and pretend you’re somewhere far sunnier. The spa was renovated a the end of 2024 and whilst I haven’t personally checked it out since, I hear it’s improved.
10. Book a Massage
There are plenty of talented massage therapists in and around Tonbridge ready to help ease tension and stress. Whether you opt for a deep tissue massage or a more relaxing aromatherapy treatment, it’s the ultimate rainy-day indulgence.
11. Play Board Games at Fuggles
Fuggles is more than just a brilliant pub for craft beer lovers — they also have a collection of board games to keep you entertained. Grab a drink, settle in with friends, and let a little friendly competition brighten up the gloom.
12. Stretch Out in a Yoga Class
Rainy days are perfect for slowing down, and a yoga class is the ideal way to reconnect with yourself. Several local studios and teachers offer classes catering to all levels — whether you’re after a gentle stretch or a more dynamic flow. Find our guide to the best yoga classes locally here.
13. Indulge at The Bakehouse 124
Warm up with a rich hot chocolate or a beautifully baked pastry at The Bakehouse 124, one of Tonbridge’s most delicious little spots. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger, watching the rain streak down the windows while you savour every bite. The scones are pretty top notch too.
14. Go wine tasting at a local vineyard
Ok hear me out, when you picture a vineyard visit, of course the ideal scenario includes roaming vines in the sunshine. But, many local vineyards also have indoor tasting rooms. If you can’t have sunshine outdoors, you can have it in your glass – Yotes Court in West Peckham for example, offers inexpensive tastings on a regular basis.
15. Watch a Film at the Odeon in Tunbridge Wells
I so wish Tonbridge had it’s own cinema, but alas we have to do with Tunbridge Wells! Just a short drive away, the Odeon offers a cosy cinema escape with all the latest releases. There’s nothing quite like settling into a comfy chair with popcorn in hand while the rain pours down outside.
Sign up to Odeon’s free membership (Odeon Extras) and you can get discounted tickets to see movies at off peak times too.
16. Try a Pottery or Art Workshop
Get creative on a rainy day with a pottery or art workshop. Several local artists and studios offer classes for beginners and experts alike — and there’s something extra satisfying about making something beautiful while the weather is anything but.
17. Browse Tonbridge’s Charity Stores
Wander (with an umbrella in hand!) through Tonbridge’s charity stores. Discover gifts, books, homewares, clothing and one-off finds that you’d never spot online. Plus, you’ll be supporting charity — a win-win.
18. Take a Fitness Class at the Angel Centre
Rainy weather can sap your energy, but a lively fitness class will bring it right back. From spin sessions to strength training, the Angel Centre has a great schedule of classes that’ll leave you feeling energised and upbeat. It costs around £11 to pop in for a “non member”, kind of worth it for a feel good hour or so.
19. Dive into Local History at the Tonbridge Historical Society
If you love discovering the hidden stories behind places, check out a talk or exhibition hosted by the Tonbridge Historical Society. You’ll gain a whole new appreciation for the town — and it’s a brilliant way to spend a thoughtful, inspiring afternoon indoors.
20. Master a Rainy Day Bake at Home
Why not pick up some fresh ingredients from Waitrose or the local Farmers’ Market and challenge yourself to a home bake? Cakes, cookies, or bread — the smell of something delicious in the oven is the perfect antidote to grey skies.
