New data released by Southeastern has confirmed Tonbridge as the busiest station for commuters in Kent. The town topped the leaderboard of the county’s ten most popular stations, recording over 1.35 million season ticket entries and exits in the last year. This represents a 6.3% increase for the station, solidifying its position at the heart of the regional rail network.
The rise in Tonbridge reflects a broader trend across Kent, where season ticket journeys have increased by 1.4 million in a single year. Total trips using season tickets rose from 13.35 million to 14.76 million, a 10.6% jump that outpaces the growth of general passenger numbers. This suggests a significant return to regular office-based work for residents across the Garden of England.
Passengers urged to switch as fare freeze continues
The surge in regular rail travel comes alongside a commitment to freeze rail fares until 2027. Transport officials are encouraging daily commuters to move away from individual ticket purchases in favour of Flexi, Monthly, or Annual Season Tickets to manage costs.
On high-frequency routes serving Tonbridge, Ashford, and Gravesend, the savings gained by switching to season tickets are substantial. Southeastern suggests these daily reductions can offset significant household expenses, ranging from the weekly food shop to smaller regular luxuries like a morning coffee or a trip to the cinema.
Local hubs dominate regional travel statistics
While Tonbridge leads in sheer volume, the data highlights a “top three” powerhouse consisting of Tonbridge, Ashford International, and Sevenoaks. Together, these three hubs accounted for 3.3 million journeys last year. They are followed closely in the rankings by Sittingbourne, Gillingham, and Gravesend.
