Here are 9 top pub gardens and terraces to visit during the spring/summer heatwave — cold drinks, shady nooks, and good vibes guaranteed.
Pub Gardens in Town
1. The Humphrey Bean (Wetherspoons), Tonbridge High Street
Yes, it’s a Wetherspoons — but this one’s got prime sun-trap seating right by the river.. Great for groups or a long session, cheap pint in hand. Expect it to be busy during sunny spells, but there are lots of outdoor tables to go around.
2. Verdigris, Tonbridge
Not a pub garden, but worth including for its gorgeous first-floor terrace overlooking the Medway. This stylish cocktail bar and restaurant is ideal for a more elevated alfresco experience. A fab place for spritzes and sunset photos.
Walk there
3. The Poacher & Partridge, Tudeley

One of the best pub gardens around. Think country pub meets landscaped garden, with loads of space to sprawl out on a sunny afternoon. Family-friendly, dog-friendly, and a top spot for a lazy weekend lunch. Just a few minutes’ drive (or a pleasant cycle) from Tonbridge.

4. Plough at Leigh, Leigh Village
Set in a sleepy village just west of Tonbridge, this charming pub boasts a beautiful beer garden surrounded by greenery. There’s often a quiet, local feel here — perfect for a midweek evening escape with a crisp glass of wine or a cold cider.
We love walking here through the park, it takes about 45 minutes to get here. So you can fit it in after work in the summer.
5. The Leicester Arms, Penshurst

If you fancy combining a walk through Penshurst Place or the Eden Valley path with a post-hike pint, this is your spot. The pub garden is relaxed and tucked away, with plenty of shade and historic village charm. Food’s a little more refined here too.
And if that doesn’t convince you, the Leicester Arms is currently in the running for a National Pub and Bar Award.
