Paws Cat Café, Tonbridge: Spotlight on local businesses

In a high street where businesses come and go with the seasons, Paws Cat Café stands out as a rare constant. Tucked just a short stroll from the main drag, Paws has quietly become one of the town’s most established independent businesses—celebrating seven years of feline-fuelled calm this year.

Run by Lauren, who launched the café with her mum, Elaine, Paws is more than just a quirky concept. It was born from a deeply personal place—an idea to create a soothing space that could help with anxiety and mental health (something close to family’s hearts), to connect people with animals, and build something meaningful in the heart of Tonbridge. Judging by its longevity, the idea clearly struck a chord.

Of course, it hasn’t been easy. But walk in today and you’d never know the effort it takes behind the scenes — because Paws doesn’t just work, it purrs like a slinky feline.

First Impressions

I’ll admit it — I’ve lived in Tonbridge as long as Paws has been open, and this was my first visit. A confession: I’m allergic to cats, despite loving them. That, and a vague worry it might smell or be covered in cat hair, kept me away. But stepping inside was a complete surprise.

The café smells fresh — genuinely — and feels calm the moment you walk in. The rain outside, the usual hustle of town, instantly fell away. Within a few seconds, I’d nearly sat on Sushi, a fluffy and slightly sassy resident cat who’d made herself indistinguishable from a scatter cushion. Moments later, a gorgeous cat leapt into my lap as if she’d been waiting all morning for me.

That’s the thing with Paws — the cats are part of the atmosphere. They don’t perform. They just are — curled in corners, perched in high nooks, watching from wall-mounted ledges or napping with a paw over their face. It’s their café, and you’re invited in — if they approve.

What to Expect

Visiting Paws is more of an experience than a coffee stop. Entry is £10, which includes a drink, and you’re given a cat guidebook to help you get to know the 19 resident cats. Many are rescues—, others given up by families—and they each have their own personalities.

Frank, (or Sir Frank as he is sometimes known) a characterful white chap with a Facebook fan club, is a firm favourite. Lauren also relayed a story about Jasper, a Romanian rescue who blossomed into a loving lap cat before passing away last year. And then the gorgeous grey, Bluebell, who enjoys perching atop a good shoulder ledge. And, that’s just a few of them – for more stories, you’d need to visit.

Importantly, the café puts the welfare of its cats first. There’s a whole upstairs retreat space just for them, with food, litter trays, and quiet time away from customers. Cats are free to roam or hide, and they choose whether to interact—nothing is forced. All cats are regularly checked by vets, and early-stage health issues are picked up through close monitoring.

The café has a 5-star hygiene rating, with a clear separation between the small kitchen and the cat areas. No food is cooked on-site, but the drinks and cakes available are well-reviewed. There’s also a membership scheme for regulars, with perks and discounts.

A Calm Community Space

What becomes clear in speaking with Lauren is just how much care and commitment goes into running Paws. Between rising business rates, vet bills, and rent, it’s not an easy venture. But it’s one rooted in love—and grit. She’s even begun campaigning for a specific cat café licence to ensure animal welfare standards across the UK meet the high bar already set at Paws.

But beyond the cats themselves, what’s really beautiful about Paws is the community it has created. Regulars return not just for the feline company, but for the atmosphere — a place that’s truly quiet, without the clatter and chaos you might find in other coffee shops. People chat, or sit in silence with a purring friend on their lap. It strikes me that it’s the puuurrr-fect place to come if you feel a little lonely, or need a little cheer in your day.

Children are welcome — but only in booked sessions, with strict guidelines to ensure the cats are respected. For Lauren, it’s not just a café but an educational space too — teaching kids how to interact gently with animals and build a sense of responsibility.

Volunteers are welcomed for work experience, and the café regularly raises money for animal charities. The sense of social value here is impossible to miss. And it seems no wonder to me that Lauren has been nominated for business person of the year in the Tonbridge business awards this year.

Why Visit?

Because it’s something different. It’s a space to slow down. A space where the outside world — the traffic queues, the supermarket rush — fades into the background while you share a sofa with a snoozing ball of fluff.

Paws Cat Café is calming and charming. It reminds us that small, thoughtful businesses can still thrive, even in challenging times. That cats — with their languid blinks and unapologetic naps — might have something to teach us about slowing down.

Tonbridge is lucky to have a place like this. If you haven’t yet stepped inside, maybe now’s the time.
