Two months after concerns over Tonbridge’s persistently poor mobile phone signal were highlighted in our April article, frustration among residents and businesses remains at an all-time high. Despite ongoing discussions, there appears to have been no tangible progress whatsoever in improving connectivity, leaving many of us to feel as though we are stuck in the digital “Dark Ages”.
Our April piece brought to light the daily struggles faced by those in the town centre, particularly around the Waitrose and river areas, where even basic tasks like paying for parking via apps or using navigation tools become monumental challenges. This isn’t merely an inconvenience; it’s a significant barrier to modern living. In 2025, it is imperative that people can reliably use their phones to navigate themselves around town, access essential services, and conduct business efficiently.
Local businesses are particularly vocal about the adverse impact on trade, with some reporting difficulties and others witnessing parking app users receiving fines due to payment failures stemming from poor signal. Our informal survey identified O2 as the worst-performing network in the central river corridor, underscoring the specific areas where improvement is desperately needed.
The persistent problem is reportedly influenced by several factors, including the number of cell towers and signal interference from buildings. While it’s acknowledged that local MP Tom Tugendhat is aware of the issue and has been working with network providers and local authorities, and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council is exploring solutions like signal boosters, the lack of visible improvement is disheartening.
It is now more crucial than ever for Tom Tugendhat MP to intensify pressure on mobile phone companies. The current situation profoundly affects the daily lives of residents and significantly hinders businesses in the town. For Tonbridge to thrive in the modern age, reliable mobile connectivity is not a luxury, but a fundamental necessity. We believe the town deserves a signal that matches its vibrant community spirit, rather than leaving its residents constantly searching for a bar.
