Good news for Tonbridge residents—Shipbourne Road has officially reopened following the successful repair of a sinkhole that caused major disruption earlier this summer.
The road, a vital route for those travelling between north Tonbridge, the town centre and the A26, was unexpectedly closed after the sudden appearance of a sinkhole in early July. The closure caused significant delays and forced traffic to be diverted through residential streets, increasing congestion across surrounding areas.
After weeks of investigative work and careful engineering, the affected section has now been fully repaired and made safe. Highways teams worked on stabilising the ground beneath the road and restoring the surface to ensure it can safely support traffic once more.
The reopening will come as a relief to both drivers and local businesses, many of whom reported difficulties due to the diverted traffic and decreased footfall. Local schools and public transport routes were also affected during the closure.
