Tonbridge’s familiar WHSmith store has undergone a significant transformation, changing its name to TG Jones as part of a nationwide rebranding effort following a major acquisition. This move reflected a broader strategic shift for the iconic retail chain across the UK.
In a deal valued at £76 million, WH Smith agreed to sell its entire UK high street chain to Modella Capital, the company behind Hobbycraft. This acquisition encompassed all 480 of WH Smith’s high street outlets and their 5,000 employees. Notably, WH Smith’s highly profitable travel division, which includes stores in train stations and airports, as well as hospital outlets, was not part of this sale and continues to operate under the WHSmith banner without any changes. This distinction highlighted the changing focus of WH Smith, with high street stores contributing a smaller 15 percent of its total profit in recent years.
Despite the change in ownership and name, Tonbridge’s newly rebranded TG Jones store continues to offer the same selection of goods and services that customers have come to expect, including the valuable Post Office counters and any in-store Toys “R” Us concessions.
The initial announcement of the TG Jones name reportedly caused some confusion, with a few observers mistaking it for a reference to the legendary former Everton footballer, Thomas George “TG” Jones. However, the new name signifies a fresh chapter for these high street retail spaces under Modella Capital’s ownership.
