Tonbridge’s food scene has been crying out for something new, and the arrival of Iro Sushi feels like it could hit the spot. Occupying a previously unremarkable site on the High Street, the new branch now stands out proudly in the company’s colours. Its central location and fresh look are sure to draw in customers.

Inside, the restaurant feels calm and inviting. The space is large, bright, and uncluttered, with clean lines and a modern finish. Red benches along each wall create a comfortable setting for a leisurely lunch — somewhere you don’t feel rushed, but encouraged to take your time. In the corner, a touchscreen ordering system adds to the Tokyo-inspired vibe.

What stood out most, however, wasn’t just the food but the friendliness of the staff. The Tonbridge team went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect, setting the tone for the whole experience.

Standout Dishes

The menu covers a wide range of Japanese favourites. Starters include gyozas, fresh salads, and poke bowls. The sushi selection is extensive, with maki, futomaki, uramaki, sashimi, and nigiri all represented. For those after something hot, there’s comfort food too — including the ever-popular chicken katsu curry. To drink, there’s a quirky nod to Japan with bottles of Ramune, alongside a good selection of soft drinks.

The presentation of the food is worth noting: colourful, neatly arranged, and absolutely Instagram-worthy. The gyozas were perfectly cooked and came with a punchy red dipping sauce that quickly became a favourite. The sushi fish tasted incredibly fresh, while the katsu curry struck just the right balance — well seasoned and satisfying without being too salty.

But the real standout? The Firecracker Roll: prawn katsu and cucumber, topped with seared salmon and unagi. Don’t leave without trying it — it’s a flavour bomb and beautifully presented.

Accessibility and Service

Iro Sushi is spacious and easy to navigate, with seating that makes it accessible for most diners. Service was also impressively quick, making it a great choice even for a tight lunch break. You could easily be in and out within 30 minutes if needed, though the calm atmosphere makes it just as tempting to linger longer.

Pricing and Value

One common worry with sushi is portion sizes — will you leave hungry? At Iro Sushi, the value for money is excellent. Around £20 per person will give you a spread of dishes to share, while a lighter lunch can be had for around £12. Compared with other lunch options in Tonbridge — whether it’s a sit-down chain restaurant or café meal — Iro Sushi offers something refreshingly different. The generous portions mean you won’t walk away hungry, and the quality of the ingredients more than justifies the price.

Part of Tonbridge’s Growing Food Scene

Tonbridge has seen a gradual evolution in its food and drink scene over the past few years, and Iro Sushi feels like part of that upward trend. Alongside long-time favourites and recent openings, it adds both variety and vibrancy to the High Street. With a new branch also opening in Sevenoaks, it’s clear Iro Sushi is expanding fast across the South East, and Tonbridge has arrived at just the right moment.

Verdict

Friendly service, fresh ingredients, quick turnaround, and stylish surroundings make Iro Sushi more than just another chain opening — it’s a genuine asset to the town. If you’re looking for fresh food that feels light but still filling, served in a bright modern setting by people who genuinely care, this might just be Tonbridge’s best new lunch spot.
